You may be able to combine any of the Service-Learning Experiences below with an ISA Academic Program.
After School Program
Work with an organization that provides after school and daycare services to children of limited economic resources. Be a positive role model and help students with homework and education activities. Engage the children by facilitating recreational activities, art and music projects.
Serve as a teacher’s aide by grading papers, assisting students with homework and supervising the classroom. Tutor special needs students one-on-one or teach English. Facilitate recreational activities and gain practical classroom teaching experience. *Due to vacations, there will be limited options from mid-December through the first week of February and the first two weeks of July. It will be possible to arrange another placement for participants during these times.
Special Education Center
This center empowers visually-impaired, hearing-impaired, intellectually disabled and other disabled individuals to live independently by providing counseling and physical, speech and occupational therapy in addition to music, art and physical education. Students at the center also receive dietary guidance and medical care. Become actively involved in the community by aiding educational or creative instruction, assisting in the dining area, and coordinating recreational activities. *Due to vacations, there will be limited options from mid-December through the first week of February and the first two weeks of July. *Limited availability for Summer 2017
Environmental, Cultural and Recreational Park
Bring surrounding communities together by dedicating your time at a free and open recreational space for children and youth. This park aims to promote an appreciation for nature and the environment in addition to art, music, and technology. Participants will have the opportunity to work on environmental projects and/or gardening projects. It is also an excellent opportunity to learn about plants typical of Costa Rica! If the student has an advanced level of Spanish, he or she might be able to assist, design and run workshops for the youth. It depends on availability and the needs of the organization.
Work as a teacher’s assistant at this state-funded PK-12 bilingual school. Directly assist students with reading, writing, listening and speaking lessons in English. There may also be opportunities to create a run other recreational activities. This is an excellent placement for those interested in gaining classroom experience. Opportunities may also include being an assistant for a PE teacher in addition to occasionally helping with English classes. *Due to vacations, there will be limited options from mid-December through the first week of February and the first two weeks of July.
