Agricultural Animal Care Center

This organization has created an environment to care for the llamas and alpacas that are a historically vital piece of Peruvian culture. Raising these animals and harvesting their wool also leads to the preservation of traditional Incan spinning, dying, and weaving practices. These cultural values are promoted among locals and tourists alike through workshops and demonstrations held at the center. Participants will assist in caring for the animals and learning the traditions of Peruvian heritage. They may also assist with tours of the facility and weaving workshops. Depending on the season, opportunities may be available with planting and harvesting various vegetables that help to feed surrounding communities.

Marine Life Conservation Organization

Lima

Join efforts with a non-profit organization dedicated to the research, rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine wildlife (sea lions, dolphins, penguins, marine otters, and sea turtles) along the central and northern coastline of Peru. Participants will have the unique opportunity to learn about marine-life rescue and rehabilitation, and possibly observe associated protocol and medical procedures. This organization's efforts rely heavily on community awareness and support, so observation and research are key. Daily duties may consist of facility maintenance, patient cleaning and feeding, patient observation, and data collection. *Note: This organization is located in San Bartolo, 50km south of the ISA office; accepted participants will be required to stay onsite in San Bartolo; therefore, this placement is not available to students on a semester study program.

Veterinary Clinic

Assist in various areas of a veterinary clinic in Cusco under the supervision of the veterinary staff. Aid customers, bathe and trim the animals, walk the dogs, and clean the cages or exercise areas. Observe the veterinarian during surgeries and assist with handing the doctor surgical instruments. Participants will also be a great asset to the clinic by translating for English-speaking clients.

Center for Malnourished Infants

This center treats newborns, babies, and toddlers (ages 0-3) with secondary malnutrition, malformations, metabolic disorders and heart disease. In addition to treatment, the center also educates the community on prenatal and preventative care. Participants will assist with feeding, dressing, and playing with the infants in between their therapy sessions, and assisting the center's staff as needed.

Nursery School

Coordinate various classroom activities, assist the head teacher and lead extracurricular activities at a school for very young children. There are two nursery school options, one for children up to 2 years old and another for children up to 4 years old. Teach basic English language to the older children and plan fun educational activities for them.

Special Education Center

This center is for children between the ages of 3 and 12-years-old that have autism or other special needs. In addition to the primary education classes that are conducted, the center also provides a multi-sensory stimulation classroom where students work with therapists on a weekly basis. Participants’ tasks may vary depending on their specific area of study or interest, however some of the possible responsibilities may include assisting with classroom management, providing individualized attention to students, or developing and assisting with art workshops and educational activities. For students studying physical/occupational/speech therapy, there may be opportunities to work with the center’s therapists during their sessions with the students.

Jordan

Refugee Camp Community Center

These camps were set up in 1968 to accommodate Palestine refugees and displaced people who left the West Bank and Gaza Strip as a result of the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Participants will have the opportunity to be paired with a teacher and work within the Community Center which provides refugees with practical knowledge and vocational skills training. Participants may teach English, provide tutoring assistance, coordinate sports, music and other extracurricular activities. *Placement availability dependent on issuance of security clearance and political stability at time of program.

The Family Development Association

Arabic (Beginning)

This association works under the umbrella of the Ministry of Social Development in Jordan and has two branches, both in East Amman. Both branches organize workshops that focus on general education and vocational skills. For those interested in working with children, one of the branches also operates a kindergarten. Numerous refuges have moved to this area and frequently participate in the foundation's activities. Potential participant responsibilities may include: teaching English to both staff and community members and organizing workshops to improve vocational and technical skills. The NGO also produces handcrafts and assistance in its social media and marketing efforts may be available.

The Association for Social Development is an NGO located in East Amman. It organizes workshops that focus on general education, language instruction, and vocational and technical skills training. The NGO provides a conservative educational atmosphere for young adults and adolescents. Teaching English will be the participant’s primary task, but additional workshops may also available depending on the participant's skills and interests.

Family Support Center

This non-profit opened in 2014 and is dedicated towards improving the health and welfare of Peruvian children. The organization provides a "home away from home" for many families that must travel to Lima so that they can be near their children during their hospitalization. Participants will assist with maintaining the facility to ensure a comfortable and welcoming environment for the families in need. Participants will also serve to support the families staying at the home during very trying times. Interested participants may have the opportunity to support fundraising events, support weekly workshops, create brochures and marketing materials, and assist in social media networking.

Labor Rights Support Center

Spanish (Intermediate)

This nonprofit is dedicated to defending the rights of domestic workers and working children, as well as to providing education to children in underprivileged communities around Lima. Participants may primarily be asked to assist with tutoring in after school programs in the outskirts of Lima, and may be required to assist with workshops on Sundays. Sunday workshops are designed to promote awareness of workers’ rights and human rights, as well as to inform the public of child labor. Participants may also help organize donations of clothing, school materials and educational information, as well as participate in recreational activities with the domestic workers and children who participate in the organization’s many projects across the city.

This center empowers visually-impaired, hearing-impaired, intellectually disabled and other disabled individuals to live independently by providing counseling and physical, speech and occupational therapy in addition to music, art and physical education. Students at the center also receive dietary guidance and medical care. Become actively involved in the community by aiding educational or creative instruction, assisting in the dining area, and coordinating recreational activities.

Observe therapists to gain a better understanding of the challenges and issues facing people with cerebral palsy. Assist this non-profit NGO with patient support, the development of new educational materials, updating current pamphlets and working on social media campaigns.

Center for Adults with Disabilities

Shadow physical therapists as they work with patients with Down Syndrome and other disabilities. Assist with physical education classes, help to develop health campaigns and assist with micro-enterprise projects that aim to instruct its members on sustainable forms of generating income and becoming self-sufficient. The School for Special Needs specializes in teaching children with a variety of learning disabilities. Depending on the specific needs of each child, the school employs behavioral, speech, and physical therapists as well as dietitians to assist the children. The school also provides training and informational courses on special education to the community. Participants may assist the teachers and staff with educational workshops, recreational activities, and English lessons. Leading and planning sports activities during the school's summer camp may also be needed.

At-Risk Youth Development and Rehabilitation Center

Empower Peru’s at-risk youth by serving in a boy’s or girl’s home in the outskirts of the city of Lima.The goal of this organization is to promote, through prevention and rehabilitation, the healthy and integral development of children and adolescents at high risk in Peru. The aim here is to encourage functional participation in academic, social, and familial settings in a healthy and violence-free environment. ISA participants will work closely with experienced staff and volunteers to promote daily practices of hygiene and health, as well as quality education. Participant responsibilities vary from assisting with day to day operations and facility maintenance, to leading workshops in language, fitness, art, and sports. Participants with a high level of Spanish proficiency may have the opportunity to observe and assist in the center's department of Psychology. *The Center is located on the outskirts of Lima, a 45-minute commute on a provided volunteer van. This placement is not available to students on a semester study program.

This organization offers psychological and learning assessments, and support programs to help enhance students’ skills. The center is made up of a team of experts in education: special educational teachers, psychologists, speech and sensory integration therapists and educational psychologists. Work with a nonprofit organization that enables children that are severely impacted by life-threatening illness to continue with as much normalcy as possible by bringing the classroom to their hospital rooms. Participants may assist at a Cancer Hospital or at a Children's hospital in Lima, and will assist the staff in helping these patients stay up to date on the school work they are missing during treatment and care. On days when patients are unwilling or unable to complete the curriculum, participants may engage in musical and/or crafting activities. Participants will also have the opportunity to observe how the Peruvian public health system works. *Note: This placement does not involve shadowing doctors or nurses.

Offering a mainstream curriculum for learners with physical disabilities, this school was founded in 1974 as a school for “differently abled” children in Xkosa-speaking communities of the Cape townships. Participants may assist in the following areas: administrative duties, coaching sports or leading other activities, supervising students during lunch and recreation times, classroom assistance and more depending on interests and skills. *This placement is for full-time, 12-week participants only.

South African Education Project

The South African Education Project is a non-profit organization that empowers young people through tutoring, enrichment and support. Its academic, enrichment and personal development programs are for children, youth and education providers. Based in one of Cape Town’s most under-resourced black townships, the organization has defined eight specific education programs for a variety of age groups. Participants’ responsibilities will vary based on the specific program for which they are accepted. *This placement requires a Skype interview and is only available for full-time, 12-week service-learning participants.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage with medical professionals in health care settings and may serve in a variety of ways depending on the health care facility with which they are placed, which may include preparing emergency kits, accompanying patients and sterilizing materials. Participants may also accompany trained professionals on home visits and/or assist medical staff in coordinating and conducting health campaigns on such topics as nutrition, dengue and immunizations. Please note that participants' experiences may vary depending on interests, host organization, language level and education level. This placement is ideal for individuals in nursing or pre-med fields. Participants will have the opportunity learn about dental care in Cusco by observing and assisting the clinic’s dentists in Cusco as they perform their daily responsibilities. Example activities include completing ondontograms, pouring molds, observing extractions as well as cleaning and sanitizing dental instruments. Participants may also be asked to assist in taking x-rays, processing lab work, and certain administrative duties such as new patient registration. *Placements that may involve patient interaction are observation-based; participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility.

Placements with a pharmacy in Cusco will primarily involve observing in the medical clinics, but during certain hours of the day, participants will be able to observe a clinic's pharmacist and learn about prescription and medicine in the area. Opportunities might also include observing medical consultations, assisting the medical staff with sterilizing utensils, and visiting with patients in the waiting room. *Placements that may involve patient interaction are observation-based; participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility.

The institute follows an early treatment approach known as the Doman Method, and one in which the parents of the child participate actively in the rehabilitation program. Participants may have the opportunity to work directly with the children and assist the staff in various areas, such as neurology, psychology, physical therapy, education and pedagogy.

San José is home to many religious-based organizations which provide support to indigent people, individuals living with HIV/AIDS, pregnant women, street children and other marginalized groups. Serve as a role model to young students and assist with English classes and other classroom projects. Facilitate arts, crafts and other activities that help to eliminate the education and career gap. *Due to vacations, there will be limited options from mid-December through the first week of February and the first two weeks of July. It will be possible to arrange another placement for participants during these times.

Collaborate with the local government to promote awareness among Costa Rican youth about environmental, health and social issues. Past projects have included environmental and health campaigns, organizing cultural activities and working at local day cares and youth centers with at-risk children.

Bring surrounding communities together by dedicating your time at a free and open recreational space for children and youth. This park aims to promote an appreciation for nature and the environment, arts and various recreational activities including music, sports, such as football, taekwondo and skating, and technology. Participants will have the opportunity to work on environmental projects or assist to design and run workshops, sports and recreational activities for the youth.
