Study Plus Service-Learning

Study + Service-Learning

Combine any of our service-learning experiences with an ISA Study Abroad program!

On this type of program, you have the opportunity to take classes at a host university and participate in an ISA service-learning experience by serving a local, community-based organization.

How does it work?

Review your course options

Based on your major, choose courses that are of interest to you by reviewing the host university’s courses on the ISA website. It’s a good idea to meet with your university’s Study Abroad Office and Academic Advisor to see which of these host universities listed below offer course options compatible with your degree plan.

Choose a service-learning experience

Search through our service-learning options filtering by the location(s) or field(s) that interest you. Read about the different types of service-learning experiences that would be a good fit for your skills, interests, and language level.

If you choose a semester Study + Service-Learning program

During a Study + Service-Learning semester program, you will attend classes and serve at your host organization for 5-10 hours per week throughout the semester. You will begin your ISA Service-Learning experience two weeks after you begin classes at the host university and you will end your ISA Service-Learning commitment one week before your final exams.

If you choose a summer or intensive month Study + Service-Learning program

Your program will begin with your ISA study abroad program during which you will take classes at a host university. Once your courses end and you have taken your final exams, you will begin your ISA Service-Learning experience full-time where you will be serving your host organization for 15-35 hours per week.

Take a service-learning course at a university abroad!

Another way to incorporate service-learning into your study abroad experience is by taking a service-learning course along with your other courses at one of ISA’s partner universities abroad. Check out the list below to see universities that offer these courses.

As a full-time student, you will take one service-learning course in addition to your other classes at a host university abroad. Please note that some host university service-learning classes may have limited availability, and may not be available during certain terms.
