About the City

Salamanca is home to the oldest and most prestigious university in Spain and is an ideal place to study abroad. Originally a fortified Roman camp, Salamanca is one of the most magnificent Renaissance cities in Europe; it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The city is best explored on foot, which allows for an intimate understanding of local landscape and culture. Sandstone buildings abound, earning Salamanca its nickname of La Ciudad Dorada or The Golden City.
