University of Salamanca

The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218 by Alfonso IX of León, is not only the oldest and most prestigious university in Spain, but also one of the most beautiful. Located near the Plaza Mayor in the heart of the city, the university has educated many great contributors to Spanish literature and humanities. Approximately 30,000 Spanish students and 7,000 international students are taught by a highly distinguished faculty that also conducts research in 53 departments. Students have access to the library within their department as well as the Santa Maria de Los Angeles library and the general library. These amazing libraries have beckoned scholars for centuries.
