Tiny Travel Story: Pacific

What's Townsville Like?

When you've got an island paradise called Magnetic right on your doorstep, it's not hard to see why people are attracted to Townsville. However, the city is even more than a magnetic destination; it's the very heart of life in the tropics. Surrounded by a rich tropical rainforests and waterfalls, Townsville is also close to historic gold mining towns, the outback, islands, and of course, the Great Barrier Reef.

You can also organize many different types of trips and adventures in Townsville. Diving enthusiasts have access to the Yongala Wreck, Australia's best wreck dive site and there are also plenty of tours available to explore the local national parks and surrounding rural townships. You can even sign-up to join an outback cattle drive. These are just some of Townsville's many hidden treasures.

Region and Population

Townsville is a thriving coastal city and port with a population of over 180,000, making it Australia's largest tropical city. Considered the unofficial capital of North Queensland, Townsville hosts a significant number of governmental, community and major business administrative offices for the northern half of the state. Townsville has a younger population than the Australian and Queensland averages, owing that in large part to the proximity to an Army base, short-time work, and a university.

Climate

Situated in the dry tropics, most days are sunny with an average day time temperature of between 77 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Townsville's winter rainfall in particular is not as high as elsewhere in the tropics and the winter months are dominated by southeast trade winds and mostly fine weather. As a result, winter months are dominated by blue skies, warm days and cool nights, although at times significant rainfall may occur.
