Prior to their departure and on-site orientation, students will receive a lengthy and detailed pre-departure orientation handbook which serves as a primer for their study abroad experience in Brazil. This handbook is designed to be used in conjunction with the Online Orientation in the Student Portal. Although the on-site orientation will cover the nitty-gritty of life in Brazil, the handbook allows students to read up on pertinent information before their arrival in Florianópolis. The handbook covers academics, culture, gender relations, useful phrases, food, housing, the university, ISA facilities, money matters, visas, and numerous other details that students also learn about during their on-site orientation. Of course, students are always welcome to contact the Brazil Site Specialist
with any questions.
Participants will be greeted upon arrival at the Hercílio Luz International airport in Florianópolis by the ISA resident staff. From there they will be taken to a hotel in downtown Florianópolis to meet fellow program participants and relax for the night. The following day students will enjoy a typical Brazilian breakfast to start off the ISA orientation.
As part of the orientation, students will receive an introduction to Brazilian society and culture, take a tour of the city, and learn about what it's like to live in Florianópolis. Resident staff will also introduce students to the academic portion of the program, including reviewing students' course selections and helping them to prepare for the placement exam if they are taking a Portuguese language course.
