Academic Year

Spanish Language & Latin American Studies - Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso -Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso

This program is designed for students at all levels of Spanish proficiency. All students must take a Spanish language placement exam upon arrival in Valparaíso. The exam will indicate each student's language proficiency level, and will determine the Spanish courses in which the student is eligible to enroll.

Students who arrive in Chile having completed less than one year of college-level Spanish will likely place into the beginning level. Students who arrive in Chile having completed one full year of college-level Spanish, will likely place into intermediate level courses.

Students at the beginning level must enroll in Beginning Intensive Spanish Language, and may only choose from among the courses instructed in English with international students.

Intermediate, high intermediate and advanced students are required to take at least 90 hours of language courses, and may select their remaining courses from among elective courses instructed in Spanish and courses instructed in English with international students.

Students who possess a high intermediate, advanced or higher level of Spanish language are eligible to choose among the PUCV's 38-hour general elective courses instructed in Spanish with local Chilean students. These courses are instructed at a higher language capacity, and therefore, is the reason these language requirements are set in place. It is important to mention that these general elective courses are NOT to be confused with "Regualr" courses with Chilean students.

All courses are instructed at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso by local faculty.
