Prior to their departure and on-site orientation, students will receive a lengthy and detailed pre-departure orientation handbook which serves as a primer for their study abroad experience in Valparaíso/Viña del Mar, Chile. This handbook is designed to be used in conjunction with the Online Orientation in the Student Portal. Although the on-site orientation will cover the nitty-gritty of life in Chile, the handbook allows students to read up on pertinent information before their arrival in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. The handbook covers academics, culture, useful phrases, food, housing, the university, ISA facilities, money matters, visas, and numerous other details that students also learn about during their on-site orientation. Of course, students are always welcome to contact the Chile Site Specialist
with any questions.
Semester, Year, and Summer students will begin the ISA program with an excursion in Santiago, Chile. The resident staff will provide a thorough on-site orientation and students will have ample opportunity to ask questions about academics, safety, host families, transportation, money, cell phones, excursions, etc. The staff will also provide students with a brief introduction to Chilean history and culture. In addition, all students in the Semester and Year programs will participate in a week-long orientation hosted by the university. This orientation allows students time to consider their course choices and change them if necessary.
