Xi'an is an ancient city, with a history that stretches back more than 3,000 years, and recent archaeological expeditions just outside the city have uncovered a 6,500-year-old village. It has been the capital of nearly all of the major Chinese dynasties, including the Zhou, Qin, and Han, and many important structures from these periods are still able to be seen today.
Xi'an is perhaps most famous for the Terra Cotta Army, which is located just outside of the city. Students who participate in this excursion will have a chance to visit the tomb of the first emperor of China, where the army is located. This more than 2,000-year-old tomb contains at least 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, and there are believed to be many more that have yet to be discovered.
**NOTE** This is an optional excursion and not included in the cost of the program. Students who wish to participate must notify ISA by the deadline given to them after acceptance. Please also note that this excursion will not be available after Fall 2017.
