Latin American Studies, Spanish Language & Courses with Locals

Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra

Fall 1 2017 + Service-Learning (Aug 28, 2017 to Dec 9, 2017)
Catalog Code: ISGEF1117

This program is designed for students with intermediate, high intermediate or advanced Spanish proficiency that are interested in participating in a service-learning or internship program in addition to their academic semester.

Academic Information
Students will participate in courses focusing on Spanish Language and Caribbean and Latin American studies. All courses will be taken at the Pontifical Catholic University "Madre y Maestra" (PUCMM) and instructed by PUCMM faculty. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in a community service program with possible placement in an organization or business in Santiago. On a limited basis, ISA students at the advanced levels of Spanish may take classes with Dominican students from the university's primary course listings. Please call the ISA office for additional information.

For level verification, all students must take a Spanish language placement exam upon arrival in Santiago. Please note that these placement suggestions are not a guarantee of a student?s Spanish level. Language levels will be determined solely by the on-site placement exam administered by the PUCMM.

***If the placement exam indicates that the student is not at the intermediate level, course options will be very limited.

Service-Learning Information
In addition to their academic courses, students will have the opportunity to spend 5-10 hours per week at a host organization, increasing language proficiency and gaining valuable international experience. Placements are arranged prior to arrival in the host country and language requirements vary. Visit the ISA Service-Learning website for more information on placement opportunities.

Service-Learning placements are coordinated by ISA and have no affiliation with the university. Students will develop a Portfolio throughout the program, documenting their projects, hours, and program activities.

Students can earn 1-6 credits based on the number of contact hours accrued at the host organization and successful completion of the Portfolio. Visit the Academic Credit page of the ISA Service-Learning website for more information.
