Experiential Learning Abroad Program (ELAP) enables participants to address the needs of a community or an organization abroad while furthering participants' personal goals of language and cultural immersion. ELAP adds another dimension to the study abroad experience through daily exposure and interactions with local community members, resulting in a greater understanding of the language and culture of the host country.
Participating in ELAP is very exciting, but it can be challenging at times since cross cultural miscommunications are inevitable in this environment. Personal initiative, patience and self-motivation are key characteristics of a successful participant, as well as flexibility, an open mind, and the desire to participate and learn. The program is designed to encourage a greater sense of social responsibility and to inspire continued involvement in a participant's home community upon his or her return. Participants complete reflection activities throughout the program, enabling them to think critically about their experience and promoting personal and professional growth.
We emphasize the value of commitment, and we believe that each participant will reap countless benefits throughout the program.
Minimum GPA
Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.50.
Minimum Admissions Prerequisites
All ELAP participants should possess an advanced level of Spanish and will have a telephone interview with an ELAP Coordinator as part of the application process. We require 4 semesters or 6 quarters of Spanish language for participants of all ELAP programs.
We recommend that participants be 20 years of age or older and/or have completed two years of college education. However, applicants who do not meet this requirement may still apply, as applicants are reviewed on a case by case basis.
APPLICATION MUST BE RECEIVED AT LEAST TWO MONTHS BEFORE THE START DATE, AS APPLICANT MAY BE SUBJECT TO A LATE FEE DUE TO RUSHED PROCESSING.
Course Disclaimer
In order for participants to earn internship, field study or independent study credit from their university, proper arrangements must be made between the student and his/her home university before the program begins. ELAP provides support throughout this process. Typically, ELAP participants volunteer 15-40 hours per week.
