What's London Like?

London is considered to be one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world and any visitor will immediately notice the great diversity found within the city. London residents, and visitors alike, hail from around the world and combined speak over 300 languages. Don't be surprised if during your first days in London you are asked for directions; as you simply cannot tell a local from a foreigner. Hyde Park, Kew Gardens, and Regent's Park are but a sampling of the abundant parks and open spaces scattered throughout London. And of course you can't miss the many royal palaces scattered throughout London and nearby towns.

The capital city has over 300 museums, 250 art galleries, 200 theaters, 6 full time symphony orchestras, and more than 600 cinema screens. Concerts, celebrities, movie premiers, theatre productions, sporting events, and world news headlines are constantly keeping London in the spotlight. Whatever one's interests may be, the attractions and activities found within London are essentially endless, and simply cannot be tackled in a single visit. London is truly in a league of its own and no matter what your taste, studying abroad in London is sure to provide you with many wonderful memories!

Region and Population

Located in southeast England, London is Europe's largest and most cosmopolitan city with a population of 7.7 million, and has a metropolitan area population of between 12 and 14 million people. The state of Great Britain is made up of the three countries including England, Wales, and Scotland. They all have distinct cultures and should not be confused! The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (also known as the UK for short) comprises the island of Great Britain, the north-east part of the island of Ireland and many small surrounding islands.

Climate

London is commonly known to have a mild and damp climate, but it is not strange to witness a complete change from rain clouds to sunshine in a matter of minutes. Also, London is home to the most 'green spaces' in the world, and with the frequent rains these parks are sure to remain lush and beautiful!
