Suva is the capital of Fiji, located on the island of Viti Levu in the Rewa Province, Central Division. A port city, Suva serves as the political, administrative, and commercial center of the country and is the largest urban area in the South Pacific outside of New Zealand and Australia.
In 1877, European authorities decided to move the main European settlement to Suva from Levuka due to the restrictive geography of the latter. Today, the city is governed by a Lord Mayor in conjunction with a twenty-member city council.
The city is home to numerous music venues, international restaurants, and sports facilities. Each year, several festivals take place in the city, including the Hibiscus Festival, which is the largest carnival in the South Pacific islands. Outside the city are beautiful beaches, perfect for swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and diving. Nearby mountains offer hiking and walking trails.
