Universities in Berlin

Freie Universität Berlin

Founded in West Berlin during the early Cold War period, Freie Universität Berlin was established when anti-communist students protested against having to attend Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, a university located in East Berlin and taught by the Soviet Military Administration in Germany. After many student protests and uprises, Freie Universität Berlin was established as a university for the "Free World" in West Berlin. Now the university is ranked as one of Germany's top universities. The university is recognized by the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Science, Berlin. Freie Universität Berlin's short-term study programs for international students have successfully completed the Quality Improvement Program (QUIP) of the Forum on Education Abroad. ISA participants studying at Freie Universität Berlin have the opportunity to take a wide range of courses with other international students.

Popular areas of study at Freie Universität Berlin include:

  • German Studies
  • European Studies
  • Political Science
  • History
  • Sociology
Located in former West Berlin, just about 30 minutes outside of Berlin's city center, Freie Universität Berlin is made up of two major campuses: the Dahlem campus and the Lankwitz campus. ISA participants studying at Freie Universität Berlin would study at the Lankwitz campus. The Lankwitz campus also is home to the university's Earth Sciences department. The Lankwitz offers beautifully-renovated classrooms and computer labs, a new cafeteria, and a library for students to use. Students are recommended to get involved in the university's language tandem program, a program that pairs international students up with local German students.

The Freie Universität Berlin was ranked 66th worldwide in the 2011 QS World University Rankings. The university was also ranked 1st in Germany, 6th in Europe, and 27th in the world for its arts and humanities in the 2009 QS World University Rankings. Klaus Wowereit, the former Mayor of Berlin, and Ernsrt Benda, the former Minister of the Interior of Germany, are just a few of Freie Universität Berlin's notable alumni.
