National University of Ireland, Galway, located near the town center, was founded in 1845. NUI Galway's verdant campus contains a mixture of state-of-the-art constructions and historic buildings. While committed to innovation in research and teaching, the university maintains close ties to its Irish culture and heritage. NUI Galway's Department of Irish and its Irish Language Institute create a strong presence on campus. Students have the opportunity to complete course work in either Irish Gaelic or English and signs on campus are written in both languages.
The student experience is central to life at NUI Galway. The university has a student population of 17,000, 13% of whom are international students. Hosting more than 100 student societies and sports clubs, NUI Galway encourages the integration of international students both inside and outside the classroom.
