Before the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Vesuvius that made the city forever famous in A.D. 79, Pompeii was a popular agricultural and vacation center for the Romans. Ironically, the same eruption that snuffed the city out also preserved it dramatically. Visitors to the excavations enjoy strolling down the pristine streets, and viewing the decorative interiors of wealthy homes. A visit to Pompeii will also give you the chance to see the insides of a Roman Arena, theatre, shops, and baths.
