Summer

Arabic Language & Middle Eastern Studies - University of Jordan

Summer 1 2017 + Service-Learning (May 19, 2017 to Aug 1, 2017)
Catalog Code: IAMEU1317

This program is for students with a beginning to intermediate level of Arabic and interested in participating in a service-learning program in addition to their academic courses.

Academic Information
The ISA summer program in Amman at the University of Jordan offers students the opportunity to learn Modern Standard Arabic while also learning about life and politics in the Middle East. Students will take two courses with other ISA students over a period of five weeks. Excursions to Jordan's most famous landmarks are included in order to give students a more comprehensive view of Jordanian culture.

The Jordanian government requires an HIV antibody test at an official Jordanian clinic for all individuals seeking to extend the initial 30-day visa granted at the airport. The ISA Amman staff will assist students throughout this process.

Service-Learning Information
The 4-week service-learning program begins the day after the ISA academic program ends. Participants will spend between 15-30 hours per week at a local organization, increasing language proficiency and gaining valuable international experience. Placements are arranged prior to arrival in the host country and language requirements may vary. Visit the ISA Service-Learning website for more information on placement opportunities.

Service-Learning placements are coordinated by ISA and have no affiliation with the university. Students will develop a Portfolio throughout the program, documenting their projects, hours, and program activities.

Students can earn 1-6 credits based on the number of contact hours accrued at the host organization and successful completion of the Portfolio. Visit the Academic Credit page of the ISA Service-Learning website for more information.
