How do I get around?

Buses
The bus station (CAXA) is 2.5km (1.5 miles) east of the town center just off Calle 20 de Noviembre. Taxis are downstairs, and prices are controlled. Tickets to the center of town cost around $2. Buses run to Veracruz every 20 to 30 minutes and to Puebla 9 or 10 times a day. You can buy tickets downtown at the Ticket Bus agency, Av. Enríquez 13, a block east of the cathedral (no phone). The office is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 2pm and 4 to 7pm.

Taxis
If you're in a hurry or have a lot of luggage, take a taxi but always agree on a price first. Taxis in Xalapa are usually inexpensive and easy to find, but because streets in the center can be hectic and narrow, sometimes you have to look for a "TAXI" sign. Before you get into the car, you should tell the driver where you want to go to make sure they know how to get there. It may be more expensive than you think to travel by taxi on a daily basis. Most foreign countries have excellent public transportation. If traveling by day and you're not in a hurry, it is definitely worth it to walk or take the bus. When hiring a taxi, request in advance the fare to be paid for your destination. Don't be alarmed if you don't see a meter, taxis in Mexico usually don't have them.

If necessary, you can arrange to have a cab pick you up at your house for an extra cost. Most excursions will have a planned meeting place in Xalapa and will not leave from the bus station. You are responsible for your own transportation to the meeting place when participating on ISA excursions.
