Massey University is one of New Zealand's top rated universities, and Palmerston North is the home of its first campus. Founded in 1926, the institution originally came into existence to fill the need for agricultural higher education in New Zealand. The university took its name from New Zealand Prime Minister William Ferguson Massey. Massey University is characterized by the practical and applied nature of many of its teaching programs and by its expertise in a wide range of fields. Massey has five academic colleges: Business, Creative Arts, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Sciences. Massey Manawatu is New Zealand's premiere and largest institution for the life sciences, agricultural, horticultural and veterinary teaching and research and is a leader in industrial innovation through areas such as food science and technology, biotechnology, advanced material sciences and product development. Massey's College of Business has an excellent reputation for its business research and theory and the practical application of these to contemporary workplaces. Massey is recognized by the Ministry of Education, New Zealand.

The campus occupies two sites in Palmerston North, the Turitea site, known for beautiful green spaces and gardens, and the Hokowhitu site, on the city side of the Manawatu River. The Palmerston North campus sites focus on teaching and research in the fields of life sciences, veterinary science, agriculture, and horticulture, as well as seeking innovation in the sciences and technology.

Massey is consistently ranked in the top 4% of universities around the world by the QS World University rankings and was ranked 340 for the 2016-2017 year. The university's agricultural and veterinary programs are ranked first in New Zealand and the top 30 in the world, and the business school is AACSB accredited. The Massey faculty has received seventeen national Tertiary Teaching Excellence awards. The Finance program is ranked within the top 10 of 170 universities in the Asia-Pacific region.
