Health Sciences & Medical Spanish - Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia

Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia

Summer 3 2017 + Service-Learning (May 19, 2017 to Jul 28, 2017)
Catalog Code: ILMEU1217

This program is for students that are interested in participating in a service-learning program after completion of their academic courses. It's open to all language levels, however, some placements require a a more advanced Spanish level.

Academic Information

The Health Sciences & Medical Spanish program allows students who are interested in the Health Sciences field to engage in a cultural immersion experience. Students will choose one of two tracks: Community Medicine or Global and Public Health.

Students are required to have an intermediate or higher Spanish level, and will combine their field work and classroom experience with a Medical Spanish course. This is a crucial component of the program as the service for good health care depends on effective communication. Students will be expected to understand specific terminology in order to follow their physician's communication and proper diagnosis for their patients.

The Health Sciences & Medical Spanish program offers two track options:

Community Medicine- The Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia defines Community Medicine as a branch of medicine that is concerned with the health of the members of a community. The emphasis in community medicine is on the early diagnosis of disease, the recognition of environmental and occupational hazards to good health, and the prevention of disease in the community. It provides comprehensive health services ranging from preventive, curative to rehabilitative services. It focuses on the health problems of communities, as well as on those of individuals who are part of the community. Students will work at one of the many health establishments associated with the program, 20 hours a week. They will receive 3 weekly hours of theoretical classes on Community Medicine.

Global and Public Health-The Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia best explains this track to be directed at university students and professionals who seek an intensive academic and hands-on experience looking at public health and community health in Peru. To understand the actors, as well as barriers and opportunities in a vulnerable community's access to health care, students will participate in multidisciplinary coursework, field visits, a research project from start to finish, and an intervention to improve health in an indigenous community.

Service-Learning Information

During the final four weeks of the program, students will have the opportunity to spend 15-35 hours per week at a host organization, increasing their language proficiency and gaining valuable international experience. Language proficiency for the internship will be determined by a phone interview before acceptance to the program. Placements are arranged prior to arrival in the host country and language requirements vary. Visit the ISA Service-Learning website for more information on placement opportunities.

Placements are coordinated by ISA and have no affiliation with the university. Students will develop a Portfolio throughout the program, documenting their projects, hours and program activities. Participants can earn 1-6 credits based on the number of contact hours accrued at the host organization and successful completion of the Portfolio. Visit the Academic Credit page of the ISA Service-Learning website for more information.
