Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (the former University of Port Elizabeth or UPE) was established in 1964. Since its inception the University has grown rapidly from 320 students to nearly 6,000. Currently, NMMU enrolls over 23,000 students with approximately 2,000 international students. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is officially recognized as an educational institution by the Republic of South Africa's Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). The DHET is a governmental department responsible for the establishment and oversight of universities and other post-secondary institutions in South Africa.

The main campus of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University enjoys a unique location in the Summerstrand section of Port Elizabeth, four miles from the city center, in a nature reserve surrounded by the sea and coastal dunes.
