During normal office hours, students may visit to access the free computer/Internet facilities, receive tutoring, utilize academic and other resources, check the ISA bulletin board for upcoming group, community, and cultural events, or simply visit with the ISA staff.
Founded in 1531, the University of Granada (UGr) is one of the oldest universities in Spain. Today it is also one of the largest, with a total degree-seeking student enrollment of over 80,000 in all departments and programs. The University of Granada's Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM), founded in 1992, is one of Spain's premier centers for the teaching of Spanish to international students. The CLM also serves as the UGr's center for the teaching of foreign languages to its own students. This dual purpose means that international students who study at the CLM have ample opportunity to interact with Spaniards studying English, French, Italian, German, Arabic, Modern Greek, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian or Swedish. The CLM's website says that "it is the combination of the two that make the centre such an original venture; here foreign students can share their daily lives with those of Spanish students, thus stimulating a mutual interest in their different languages and cultures."
The original CLM building, in the converted 16th century palace of Santa Cruz, is located in the Realejo district in the heart of the city of Granada. The renovation was carried out with instruction in mind, and the historic building now has modern audiovisual systems in all the classrooms, a state-of-the-art multi-media language laboratory, and its own library equipped with special materials for language learning and teaching. There are approximately 2,000 Spanish students and 2,000 foreigners studying at the CLM at any given point in time. Due to the prestige of the university and the growth of the student population, the CLM has recently expanded into a second building. The second CLM building is a few minutes walking distance from the original structure. Both buildings hold classes for both Spanish and foreign students.
ISA Housing assignments are located throughout the city of Granada.
Homestays, Residencias, and Apartments each provide a unique opportunity for students to experience aspects of the Spanish lifestyle that are inaccessible to the average visitor of Spain. All ISA housing options are either within walking distance or conveniently located near public transit routes. Travel times to the various university buildings generally range between 15 and 40 minutes depending on housing and class locations.
