Description:Students at an advanced level of Spanish or higher will take courses at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso with local students and can choose from hundreds of courses offered from a wide variety of departments including history, business, art, geography, literature, psychology, education, religious studies, sciences and many more. All students must take a Spanish language placement exam upon arrival in Valparaíso. The exam will indicate each student's language proficiency level, and will determine the Spanish courses in which the student is eligible to enroll. Students are required to enroll in at least one "regular" course with locals and 3-4 additional courses of their choice. Students have the option of taking any course offered with international students through the Spanish Language & Chilean Culture program. However, in order to optimize the academic rigor of this program, ISA strongly recommends that students enroll primarily in regular courses with locals. Please note that there are two different types of courses with locals offered at the PUCV -- General and Regular. Regular courses were designed for native Spanish speakers and the majority of students enrolled in them are locals. General courses, on the other hand, were originally designed with international students in mind; they are less challenging, more tailored to students who place into lower levels of Spanish language, worth less credit hours, and generally have more international students than locals enrolled. All courses are held at the main campus of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso and are taught by host university faculty. Classmates are international and local students. Students who do not wish to enroll in at least one regular course with locals will be required to switch to the Spanish Language & Chilean Culture program. Students may also add an Intensive February Month to the Spring/Year program for a discounted price. Contact the ISA office for further details....read more

ELAP adds another dimension to the study abroad experience through daily exposure and interactions with local community members, resulting in a greater understanding of the language and culture of the host country. Participating in ELAP is very exciting, but it can be challenging at times since cross cultural miscommunications are inevitable in this environment. Personal initiative, patience and self-motivation are key characteristics of a successful participant, as well as flexibility, an open mind, and the desire to participate and learn. The program is designed to encourage a greater sense of social responsibility and to inspire continued involvement in a participant's home community upon his or her return. Participants complete reflection activities throughout the program, enabling them to think critically about their experience and promoting personal and professional growth. We emphasize the value of commitment, and we believe that each participant will reap countless benefits throughout the program....read more

ELAP Stand-Alone Programs
ELAP in London
London, England
Description:Experiential Learning Abroad Program (ELAP) enables participants to address the needs of a community or an organization abroad while furthering participants' personal goals of language and cultural immersion. ELAP adds another dimension to the study abroad experience through daily exposure and interactions with local community members, resulting in a greater understanding of the language and culture of the host country. Volunteering and interning abroad through ELAP is very exciting, but it can be challenging at times since cross cultural miscommunications are inevitable in this environment. Personal initiative, patience and self-motivation are key characteristics of a successful volunteer, as well as flexibility, an open mind, and the desire to participate and learn.

A study abroad experience at King's College will allow you to call London, the world's most diverse city, home. Through ISA at King's College students have the opportunity to study along side British and other international students. Courses are taught in English by King's College professors and are held on their campuses located in central and south-central London. Information provided below explains each program option. Pre-Medical Studies (Spring 2, Fall 2, Year 2) In the Pre-Medical Studies curriculum pathway students are required to enroll in the Health and Society module (course), alongside three other modules. Clinical placements are included as part of the Health and Society module which makes this program ideal for students wishing to attend Medical School after graduation. In general, students complement the Health & Society Module by selecting other courses in the School of Biomedical & Health Sciences. While they are not restricted to only this school and still have the flexibility to choose courses from the full King's module catalog they will still be subject to Pre-Medical Studies tuition price. Arts & Sciences or Global Health (Spring 3, Fall 3, Year 3) As part of the Arts & Sciences or Global Health curriculum pathway students can select modules (courses) offered by the School of Arts & Humanities, School of Biomedical & Health Sciences, School of Law, School of Natural & Mathematical Sciences, School of Nursing & Midwifery (excluding clinical placements) or School of Social Science & Public Policy. All course selections are subject to approval by King's College and not guaranteed. Students wishing to take a more specific focus can choose the Global Health track and simply indicate this on the first line within their letter of intent. Students participating in this track are required to take Introduction to Global Health and Introduction to Social Medicine alongside two other courses within the Arts & Sciences program. The Global Health track does not include clinical placements and is ideal for a number of different majors. In addition to ISA Scholarships, as a semester or year student at King's College London you may be eligible to receive a KCL scholarship: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/international/abroad/prospective/sa/scholarships.html...read more

Arts & French Language
ISA Paris
Paris, France
Description:This is a unique five-week opportunity to discover Paris through the arts and language. The program is a perfect match for one who seeks a study abroad experience with arts courses taught in English. French language courses are also available. While French courses take place in the classrooms at the Catholic University of Paris, arts courses step out into the city, as professors lead students through museums and monuments of interest, relating foundations of art to the students' own work. French courses are available at all language levels. All students taking a French language course must complete a two-part French language placement exam, one portion before departure for the program and the other upon arrival in Paris. The exam will indicate each student's language proficiency level, and will determine the courses in which the student is eligible to enroll. Please use the following only as a guideline to determine what each student's language level may be. Each semester/quarter is of COLLEGE-LEVEL French or the equivalent of: True Beginning (Débutant) = 0 Semesters/0-2 Quarters Beginning (Elémentaire 1) = 0-2 Semesters/0-3 Quarters High Beginning (Elémentaire 2) = 1-2 Semesters/2-3 Quarters Low Intermediate (Elémentaire 3) = 2-3 Semesters/3-5 Quarters Intermediate (Intermédiaire 1) = 3-5 Semesters/5-8 Quarters High Intermediate (Intermédiaire 2) = 3-6 Semesters/5-9 Quarters Advanced (Intermédiaire 3) = 4-7 Semesters/6-11 Quarters High Advanced (Avancé 1) = 5-8 Semesters/8-12 Quarters Superior (Avancé 2) = 6+ Semesters/9+ Quarters Please note that a student's French language level in France may be lower than his/her level in the U.S. During the program, students may choose one of two options: Option A: Students focus solely on art by taking two arts classes, 45 contact hours each. Option B: Students combine one arts course of 45 contact hours and one French course of 60 contact hours. Art classes, designed specifically for the Arts & French Language program, are taken with other students participating in the program. French classes are taken with other international students. The Catholic University of Paris issues the transcripts for this program. Gap Year students, 18 years of age and older, are also eligible for this program.
