Outside Scholarships

Many US universities and study abroad offices offer scholarships to their students for study abroad. Please check with your home university and use these search engines to find even more great opportunities. In addition, the following is a list of scholarships available through outside organizations. Eligibility requirements vary based on field of study, host country, financial need and student background. Please refer to each scholarship's website for further details.

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program

Recipients are awarded up to $5000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad.

Boren Scholarships

Funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), these scholarships provide up to $20,000 to undergraduate students from the US to study abroad in areas of the world that are underrepresented rel="noopener noreferrer" in study abroad.

BUTEX North American Scholarships

£500 scholarships are awarded each year to currently registered students at US universities who will study abroad at a BUTEX member institution in the UK. (All current ISA UK host universities are members which means all ISA England, Scotland & Northern Ireland students can apply for this scholarship.)

DAAD Scholarships

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) invites undergraduate students of all disciplines to apply for scholarships funding study abroad, rel="noopener noreferrer" senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany.

Fund for Education Abroad

FEA awards funds to students planning to study abroad on academically rigorous programs with a strong preference for underrepresented students. FEA is expanding access to study abroad by raising awareness of its benefits to the individual and value to the collective, and by granting scholarships of up to $10,000.


In addition to the general scholarships, FEA also offers dedicated scholarships. To be eligible for a dedicated scholarship, students must also meet the general FEA scholarship eligibility requirements, and indicate their interest through their application forms. FEA's dedicated scholarships include:
  • BASAA Scholarship - awarded to a deserving student who attends a U.S. university/college located in the BASAA area (Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Connecticut).
  • DC Area Scholarship - awarded to a deserving student who attends a U.S. university/college located in the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, or suburban Maryland.
  • Hiliary Echo Douglas Memorial Scholarship - awarded to one student each year planning to study abroad in Vietnam or within other Southeast Asian cultures.
  • Jane Gluckmann & Carol Rausch Go Global Scholarship - awarded to one student each year planning to study abroad in Mexico, Central America, South America, France, or Germany.
  • Minnesota Scholarship - awarded to a deserving student who attends a U.S. university/college located in Minnesota.
  • PDX Abroad Scholarship - awarded to a deserving student who attends a U.S. university/college located in the Portland, Oregon-area.
  • Rainbow Scholarship - awarded to a deserving LGBTQI student who aims to participate in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program.
  • STA Travel Start the Adventure Scholarship - Two FEA/STA Travel Start the Adventure Scholarships ($2,500 each) will be awarded to applicants studying rel="noopener noreferrer" during the summer semester.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia


Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Freeman-ASIA will fund approximately 400 students over the next two academic years beginning in Summer 2016. The awards range from rel="noopener noreferrer" $3,000 per student for summer study and $5,000 per semester, to a maximum of $7,000 for a full year abroad.

Go rel="noopener noreferrer" Overseas

Go Overseas awards one $500 scholarship to a student studying abroad through a photo essay contest.

Go Overseas and Education Ireland

Go Overseas and Education Ireland are giving away two US$15,000 scholarships towards tuition to study abroad in Ireland. rel="noopener noreferrer" This scholarship includes an accommodation stipend and round-trip flight to Ireland. Apply for one undergrad semester abroad or a full year master's degree.

Go rel="noopener noreferrer" Overseas and Education New Zealand

Go Overseas and Education New Zealand are providing one US$15,000 scholarship to study abroad in New Zealand.

New Zealand Generation Study Abroad Excellence and Travel Awards

Education New Zealand Travel Award (ENZTA)
- Education New Zealand offers US$2,000 to help students fund their flight to rel="noopener noreferrer" New Zealand.

New Zealand University Excellence Awards (NZUEA)
- New Zealand Universities offers US$500 for study at one of the eight New Zealand universities.

Hispanic College Fund

The Hispanic College Fund reaches out to Latino college students in need.

HI USA Explore the World Travel Scholarships

Hostelling International USA (HI USA) is committed to creating a more tolerant world, and these scholarships create a whole new breed of young travelers inspired to make the world a better place, but lack rel="noopener noreferrer" the financial means to go abroad. Recipients of the scholarship receive $2,000 to help finance their international trip as long as they have an educational or service component to their itinerary.

Live Like Ally Foundation

The Live Like Ally Foundation awards multiple scholarships to students between 15 and 23 years old who intend to intern, volunteer, or participate in a service learning project while abroad. Live Like Ally is a memorial to Allison Willen, who rel="noopener noreferrer" was studying abroad in Dunedin, New Zealand, when she tragically passed away. Ally's love for people, for nature and for life has led her family to create the foundation, which seeks to give other students the opportunity to discover the world and impact it for the better, as Ally did.

Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship

One £1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to currently registered students at US universities who rel="noopener noreferrer" will study abroad for at least one semester at a AASAP/UK member institution. There is only 1 application deadline for an entire academic year and it usually falls in April. (Currently only the University of Westminster, Queen Mary, University of London, University of Reading and Kingston University are members).

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF)

The National Italian American Foundation awards scholarships and grants to outstanding Italian-American students on the basis of academic merit.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants

Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.

Rotary International

Ambassadorial scholarships offered through local Rotary clubs.

Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship

SCSF provides need-based grants rel="noopener noreferrer" ranging from $1500 to $2500.

STA Travel Start the Adventure Scholarship

STA has created two $2500 scholarships for students for a study abroad program. These awards are part of STA Travel's mission to make international education accessible.

Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarship

Tortuga Backpacks offer a $1,000 study abroad scholarship and one travel backpack. Two scholarships are offered each year, one for the spring semester and one for the fall semester.

Turkish Coalition of America Study Abroad Scholarships

The Turkish Coalition of America provides up to 100 scholarships per year to students who have minority or heritage backgrounds. These scholarships are awarded to rel="noopener noreferrer" eligible undergraduate and graduate students who have been accepted to a language program or university study abroad program in Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), or Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

United Negro College Fund

UNCF offers an array of scholarship programs rel="noopener noreferrer" from the nation's largest minority education organization.

University Language Services

Take a photo that captures what you learned from studying abroad, write a short description of 100-200 words, and you could win a $500.00 college scholarship!

US-Japan Bridging Foundation Scholarships

The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan, assisting with the travel and living expenses students will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year.

Varsity Tutors College Scholarships

Monthly essay contest that awards $1,000 to eligible participants.
