    Syllabus

    PURPOSE
    The purpose of this module is to introduce learners to the concept and principles of sustainable development and the relationship between health, the environment and sustainability and to introduce them to ecological principles as a foundation that must be considered in the identifying, assessing, managing and controlling of Environmental Health risks in the context of Environmental Health service delivery.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES
    On completion of this module students will be able to:

    discuss sustainable development and sustainability principles in relation to applicable issues;
    describe applicable local and global policy documents and protocols which support sustainable development;
    explain the basic principles of ecology;
    describe the effect of humans on the environment and the role that an Environmental Health Practitioner can play in reducing these effects;
    discuss the influence of environmental factors on children?s health.

    CORE CONTENT
    The Principles of Sustainable Development.
    National and International Frameworks supporting sustainable development.
    Introduction to ecology.
    The causes of environmental crisis and the associated remedial strategies.
    Introduction to Children?s Environmental Health.

    Evaluation criteria
    This module will be assessed during an examination in June/July. 1 x 2-hour examination. To pass this module a minimum final mark of 50% must be obtained. This final mark is made up of a class mark (40%) and the exam mark (60%).
