Students will take three courses simultaneously at this level: Integrated Chinese, Chinese Listening, and Spoken Chinese. Each course component will be evaluated separately and participants will receive a separate grade for each component on their transcript.
This class is designed for students with no Chinese background. We will begin from the very beginning of the textbook. The first five lessons mainly cover Chinese phonetics. Students will have the opportunity to work on all pronunciation problems and learn the whole pinyin system, as well as some day-to-day and classroom expressions. Students will also begin to learn basic strokes of Chinese characters. From lesson 6, students will learn how to discuss several topics as well as read short texts. Through these activities, students will learn vocabulary, sentence patterns and grammar. The goal of this class will be to cover lessons 1-14 in the textbook. The topics include: family, school, daily life, leisure time, and meeting new people, and other subjects. At the end of the semester, the goal is for students to gain command of 600 vocabulary words and 30 basic Chinese grammar patterns.
In this class, students will practice very basic spoken expressions such as greetings, numbers, and place and time. Students will practice in pairs and in groups. This course will cover lessons 1-18 in the textbook. After successful completion of this course, students will be able to: a) communicate with others using very basic conversation skills in all aspects of daily life; b) use 300-400 of the most frequently used conversational vocabulary words; c) improve on tones, pronunciation, and the ability to put words together to make proper sentences etc.; and d) expand their cultural views. The first book of Developing Chinese - Elementary Speaking Course will be used as the textbook for this course.
This course will cover lessons 1-18 in the textbook, and is to train the students to recognize the differences of the four tones, pronunciation and intonation Simple sentences and basic conversational expressions in daily life occasions are introduced and practiced through the course. Tapes, videos and course instructions are conducted at a slower speed than normal. This course can also help students get ready for the listening portion of the HSK Test. The first book of Developing Chinese - Elementary Listening Course will be used as the textbook for this course.
