  • Overview

    Course Objectives: 

    This course will examine selected topics in the history of Korean-American relations from 1866 to the present.  Topics include, among others:  the General Sherman Incident;  the establishment of diplomatic relations with the United States;  the roles of American advisers, missionaries, businessmen, and diplomats, including William Nelson Lovatt and Horace Allen;  the US role in the Japanese seizure of Korea;  American missionaries during the Japanese occupation;  the immigration of Koreans to the United States and their life there, including working on the sugar plantations, the arrival of picture brides, the nationalist movement against the Japanese, and intergenerational problems;  the American occupation of South Korea after liberation;  the Korean War;  and post-Korean war issues between the two nations.
