This course will investigate the evolution of drawing, and its role in the arts, as well as society. The goal of this course, is to have students develop an appreciation for the many, motivations for drawing specifically, and art, in general.
This course will be presented as a series of slide lectures examining an historical sequence of drawing styles, and modes of organization.
Topics will include:
- Understanding Drawing, an introduction
- Humanist Drawing Rembrandt to Turner
- Asian Painting
- Realism and Impressionism
- Symbolism and Post Impressionism
- Expressionism to Surrealism
- Abstract Expressionism to Pop
- Contemporary Asian Art
There will be two exams, two review lectures, and a final project that will include: curating, and a short oral presentation. Videos and other lecture topics will be added as the class develops.
