    Course Description:

    The purpose of this seminar is to introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of behavior and mental processes of human beings and animals. Students will be exposed to classic ideas, psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with the major subfields within psychology. Students will also learn about the methods psychologists use in their science and practice. The class meetings will be run in a seminar style, with discussion more common than lecturing. It is the expectation that every student in this class will participate in the discussions. There will be one required paper and one power point presentation.

    Required Readings:

    We will be reading classic texts, short books, and scientific articles distributed on the ISC website. Readings may include the following and will be determined as the class proceeds:

    St. Augustine. Confessions.

    Aristotle. On Memory and Reminiscence

    Russell. The Analysis of Mind

    Asch: Studies of Independence and Conformity

    Frankfurt: On Bullshit

    James. Principles of Psychology: Memory

    Loftus. Make-believe memories

    Luria, Alexander. The Mnemonist.

    Gallup. Self-recognition in primates.
