    General Description & Course Content

    The purpose of this course is to give Korea University undergraduate students the necessary spoken and written business communicative skills that will directly enhance their effectiveness in job recruitment and career advancement. This course has been designed on the basis of the instructor’s experience (taught job hunting skills to over 1,000 Korea University students as well as business leaders and MBA students). This course will focus on developing the necessary skills in both communication.  In fact a recent survey by the BBC reported that one major deficiency of applicants is poor communication skills.

    This course is conceived as a practical writing workshop, not a theoretical class, and will include in-class tutorials, peer review and pair work. Students will first understand the various aims and purposes of business English. Second, students will practice the language style and characteristics of business English (e.g., active voice, direct and clear language, etc.). Third, for each type of business communication, students will learn effective ways to organize their communication coherently to achieve its specific purpose. The instructor will demonstrate proper and appropriate professional formatting for each type.

    Spoken (Verbal):  expressing quantitative data, participating in group discussions/meetings, participating in job interviews, role-play simulation

    Written: As written business documents (a) reflect the individual’s and organization’s professionalism, (b) are permanent and therefore form a lasting impression and (c) are legal business documents, it is imperative that business practitioners be able to communicate coherently and effectively in writing. Hence, routine forms such as resumes, cover letters, memos, responses to investment enquiries, presentation visual aids (e.g., PowerPoint, OHP slides, etc.), investment brochures, etc.
