  • Overview

    Course Description
    Poems, plays, stories, and novels that have been turned into movies; discussions of the difference imposed by the printed word and cinema in shaping the same material into different artistic expressions; analysis of typical films such as Ishiguro’s Remains of the Day or Tennessee William’s A Street Car Named Desire.

    Course Objective
    1. To be able to understand and express orally and in writing the complex interplay between literature and film
    2. To use and understand literary analysis terminology: plot structure, setting, a point of view, characterization, and theme to explain a work of fiction.
    3. To use and understand film analysis terminology, including terminology shared with literary analysis and terminology specific to film studies to explain a film and to compare the literary work with the film adaptation.
    4. To use skills learned in the course of the trimester to analyze a literary adaptation NOT discussed in the class. This analysis will be a research paper using the text, the film, and critical reviews of both.
