    Course Description

    A new form of entrepreneurship is developing. Instead of focusing on one country, today’s innovative start-ups are looking globally for ideas, funding, people and markets. This course is designed to introduce you to the theory and reality of taking an entrepreneurial business international or global in both established and emerging markets.

    As developing and growing entrepreneurial and innovative businesses, they are very different to managing, large established businesses in an international or global context. This course explores the special problems and advantages associated with entrepreneurial small and medium enterprises as well as re-interpreting the skills you have acquired into a global context.

    You will explore International entrepreneurship theory, diverse approaches to entrepreneurship as well as cultural and business environments across countries. You will also examine opportunity recognition and selection, innovative business strategies and look at ways to source appropriate finance in established and emerging markets while also being aware of entrepreneurial ethics and sustainability in a globalised economy.

     

    Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

    On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

    • Evaluate the issues and challenges facing global startups and outline how they affect both Australian and international companies aiming to go global at early stages in their development and growth.
    • Assess the personal qualities of a global entrepreneur and explore the opportunities as to whether, when and how you would like to become a global entrepreneur.
    • Compare managing a local, developing and growing entrepreneurial and innovative business to managing a large established business in an international or global context.
    • Transfer and apply your existing capabilities and skills into an international or global context for entrepreneurial startups.

     

    Overview of Learning Activities

    In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work. These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.

     

    Overview of Learning Resources

    Various learning resources are available online through MyRMIT StudiesBlackboard. In addition to topic notes; assessment details and a study schedule you may also be provided with links to relevant online information; readings; audio and video clips and communication tools to facilitate collaboration with your peers and to share information.

    The assessment tasks, their weighting and the course learning outcomes to which they are aligned are as follows:

    Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or in online forums through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
