  • Overview

    DESCRIPTION: 
    The role of the government in a mixed economy. National income accounts. Economic fluctuations, unemployment and inflation. Fiscal and monetary policy. Macroeconomic controversies.

    RATIONALE: 
    This course introduces the student to the economic functions of the government, especially relating to macroeconomic policy. It enables the student to become familiar with issues regarding the theory and practice of fiscal and monetary policies in open and closed economies. It introduces him/her to current macroeconomic disputes.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
    As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
    1. Demonstrate knowledge of core macroeconomic principles and concepts.
    2. Define the limits of the government’s role in the market system.
    3. Define national income accounts and explain the impact of omitting environmental and other social welfare issues from their calculation.
    4. Demonstrate knowledge of the nature of economic fluctuations.
    5. Interpret measurements and identify causes of the different types of unemployment and inflation.
    6. Demonstrate understanding of the stabilization function of macroeconomic policy.
    7. Describe the theory and nature of money and the banking process.
    8. Identify controversial political, social and ethical issues in macro theory and policy.

    METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING: 
    In congruence with the learning and teaching strategy of the college, the following tools are used: 

    - Class lectures, interactive learning (class discussions, group work) video presentations, and practical problems solved in class.
    - Exercises and primary source documents are assigned as homework, the solutions of which are reviewed in class.
    - Office hours: students are encouraged to make full use of the office hours of their instructor, where they can ask questions, see their exam paper, and/or go over lecture material.
    - Use of a blackboard site, where instructors post lecture notes, assignment instructions, timely announcements, as well as additional resources.
