  • Overview

    This course will further your knowledge in the basics of inorganic chemistry. This includes a discussion of
    different types of bonding, geometrical and steric considerations. Trends across the periodic table will be
    highlighted, and examples cited to illustrate the relevance of these concepts to applied fields. The course
    will concentrate on the properties and reactivity of metal centres, including an introduction to crystal field
    and ligand field theory, and a mechanistic discussion of ligand substitution and redox reactions, the major
    reactivity patterns at the metal centre. This material will be connected to macroscopic properties such as
    magnetism and colour, and to modern applications, e.g. in sustainable energy and biochemical processes.
    The lectures will cover the following topics: Chemical bonding in inorganic compounds ? valence bond theory (VSEPR) ? Isomerization & Symmetry ? Acid-base reactions (Brønsted) ? Lewis acids and bases ?
    Ligands and ligand classes, and electron counting ? Electronic consequences of ligand bonding (crystal field theory & ligand field theory, incl a supershort introduction to molecular orbital theory) ? Reactions
    at the metal (I): substitutions ? Reactions at the metal (II): reductions and oxidations ? the metal-carbon bond: organometallic chemistry.
    The laboratory part of this course involves synthesis and characterisation of
    transition metal complexes and analytical inorganic chemistry. Several transition metal acac complexes and a
    silver phosphorus ylide complex will be synthesized. The analytical part involves permanganate and EDTA
    titrations and uv/vis determination of Fe(III) via thiocyanate formation.
