    COURSE DESCRIPTION
    The strength of the economy in recent decades has been the basis for the hospitality sector's excellent performance, making it one of the fastest-growing industries world-wide. This significant increase in the number of hotels, however, has led to the development of a highly competitive industry, where differentiation and optimal resource management are key factors to guaranteeing the success of any organization.

    Currently, the hotel industry is undergoing major transformations as a result of the social and technological changes that have emerged in recent years. These innovations affect management, the provision of services, marketing hospitality products, and even new product proposals. In this context, hotels need highly-qualified professionals with analysis techniques and technology skills that allow them to take on and satisfactorily meet the challenges presented by the sector, and who have the ability to apply management styles and models adapted to the needs of the hotel business.

    In this course, the student has the opportunity to delve into the reality of managing a hotel establishment in all its aspects: economic-financial, commercial, operational and human resources. Through a practical case study, the student will apply the theoretical concepts presented in the classroom to create their own hotel product. They will see all steps in the process, from the definition of the ideal, to a viability study, which will allow them to perfect the use of the most common hospitality management tools.

    The course is part of the mandatory requirements for the specialization in Hospitality Management and presents the material necessary to advance in the different set course plans.

    GENERAL SKILLS
    Customer orientation:
    Have the motivation to understand and satisfy customers' needs (internal and external) when offering them services and/or products, keeping in mind all aspects of the relationship, responding to their requests and suggestions and, if possible, anticipating their needs and requests, providing an immediate, appropriate solution.

    SPECIFIC SKILLS
    Understand and implement quality standards in tourism service processes:
    The context of providing a tourism service requires an understanding of the meaning of quality management in order to guarantee maximum customer satisfaction, paying special attention to the process' design, its implementation and the importance of measuring results.
    Know and use information and communication technologies, as well as associated management systems:
    Information and communication technologies (ICTs) and tourism have a symbiotic, dynamic relationship. ICTs are a critical element for the tactical and strategic management of the tourism business unit; without them, the current level of development could not have been achieved. Computer Reservation Systems (CRS) and Global Distribution Systems (GDS) are good examples of the importance of technology in the distribution and management of tourism activity.
    Identify and manage the internal aspects, functions and operational processes of tourism business units:
    Success in tourism business management is measured by the capacity to coordinate different operational processes. This requires an understanding of how the complex structures, systems and processes that comprise different tourism activities work: accommodation, restaurants, intermediation, and transportation.
    LEARNING OBJECTIVES
    - Make the student aware of the importance of providing services with the utmost efficiency and effectiveness:
    Be capable of interpreting and drawing conclusions from data provided in order to maximize the company's profitability and to provide added value for the client.
    - Constantly review operational systems to reach a business excellence model which is highly competitive and focused on customer satisfaction:
    Recognize the main factors that affect the hospitality industry and, as a result, the management of tourism accommodation companies.
    - Reflect on current hospitality trends and forecasts for hospitality business behavior.
    - Identify the most important Quality and Environmental Management Systems used in tourism accommodation companies:
    Analyze and compare the standards/criteria used in the main quality management systems (QMS) in the hospitality sector.
    Know computer systems used for applied management in hotels:
    - Identify ICTs as an instrument for decision making in hospitality management.
    - Understand the different variables that affect the creation of an organizational structure for a hospitality establishment:
    - Distinguish the unique management features for new hospitality products and their resulting business models.
    - Organize tasks, functions, schedules and shifts for the personnel assigned to each department according to the strategic plan.
    - Understand the basic principles of hospitality management:
    - Understand and know how to apply methods for calculating sales price, price setting policies, and the distinctive features of hospitality contracting.
    - Plan specific objectives for each department, the necessary human and material resources, including cost studies and the results of planned actions.
    - Prepare and analyze the items that comprise a hospitality budget, providing breakdowns for specific areas or departments.
    - Determine, when executing the budget, the deviations that took place, their causes, and possible corrective actions.
    - Understand the importance of the role of Hotel Director in achieving success in the organization.

    LEARNING METHODOLOGY
    The learning strategies employed are mainly aimed at the student developing the abilities associated with the skills identified. Below we specify the teaching-learning methodologies which will be applied to achieve the skills to be gained, as well as specifying how they will be developed:
    - Theory: master classes, lectures, group projects.
    - Theoretical-practical: application activities, problem-based learning, problem solving, practical exercises, research.
    - Presentations: presentations of results. This will allow the student to receive feedback on how to improve his or her oral communication techniques and become accustomed to using information technology.

    EVALUATION SYSTEM
    The tools used to evaluate the course are those which allow us to assess the course's contents in both a theoretical and practical way; such as objective tests, development tests, individual projects, group projects, in-class activities, oral presentations using IT, virtual forums, portfolios, practical cases, problem solving, etc.
