    COURSE DESCRIPTION:
    The objective of this course is to develop a comprehensive understanding of contemporary Spain. We will focus on where we came from and where we?re going.

    COURSE CONTENT:
    UNIT 1 ? HOW TO BEHAVE IN SPANISH SOCIETY
    Social customs and cultural norms in Spanish life

    UNIT 2 ? PROFILE OF SPAIN
    Political systems, religions, languages of Spain, economy and industry, educational system, social problems, family, special topics

    UNIT 3 ? WHERE WE ARE
    Spanish geography. Autonomous communities of Spain: Andalucía, Castilla y León, Cataluña, Galicia, Madrid y País Vasco (Basque Country). Cultural and ethnic diversity.

    UNIT 4 ? WHERE WE CAME FROM
    Spanish History:
    4.1. The Romans and Romanization
    4.2. Muslim Spain
    4.3. The Catholic Kings and Christopher Columbus?s voyage to America
    4.4. The Formation of a Spanish Empire: Carlos I y Felipe II
    4.5. The Civil War, Dictatorship under Franco y Democracy

    UNIT 5 ? CELEBRATIONS AND FOLKLORE
    5.1. National celebrations and festivals: Christmas, Reyes, Semana Santa
    5.2. Local celebrations and festivals: Feria de Sevilla, Fallas de Valencia, San Fermines

    GRADE: 30% Mid-term exam
    40% Final exam
    30% Essays, homework and class participation

    ATTENDANCE:
    Attendance is mandatory (maximum of 2 absences without documentation permissible). Tardiness will be counted as ½ an absence.

    ADD/DROP POLICY: Changing course level can only be realized during the first week of classes. Likewise it will be impossible to drop a course after the second week of classes has begun.
