  • Overview

    COURSE OBJECTIVE
    • The student knows the methodological foundations of three main ways of conducting empirical language and communication research (experiment, survey, and case-study).

    • The student is able to evaluate the quality of a study.

    • The student is able to comprehend basic quantitative information.

    • The student is able to translate between research questions and quantitative information.

    COURSE CONTENT
    Critical consumers of scientific publications need to be able to judge the plausibility of the conclusions in the light of the obtained data. This entails evaluating the extent to which the design of the study and the analysis of the data justify the conclusions. Participants of this course will study the necessary concepts (such as validity and reliability) and develop skills to do that evaluation in a systematic way.

    Lectures and seminars (3 x 2 hours per week).
