CULTURE, COMPOSITION AND CONVERSATION IN SPANISH
In this course, ?Cultura, Conversación, y Redacción en El Idioma Español?, students are pushed to develop communicative skills necessary to effectively decipher academic contexts both at the oral and written levels. At the end of the course the student will have improved his/her language skills to an advanced level of proficiency in the Spanish language. This course deals with social and cultural themes, introducing students to the richness of Peruvian culture. Also, he/she will have studied some historical facts that marked the XX century and gained some general knowledge about geographical and cultural diversity/traditions in Peru.
1. To be able to express themselves fluidly and correctly in an academic context, intensively practicing the following situations:
? To express and sustain points of view
? To structure small oral presentations
? To create oral summaries of main ideas and themes, regarding the reading material.
2. To express themselves correctly in academic essays by obtaining the necessary knowledge of the following::
? Develop ideas coherently.
? Refer to examples, evidence, facts, etc, with the objective to support and develop ideas.
? To appropriately write introductory and conclusion paragraphs.
3. To obtain a better comprehension of the Peruvian culture through the study of important historical facts and the geographical and cultural diversity of Peru.

1. To orally express points of view through the study of various cultural themes.
2. To use the correct rhythm and intonation patterns when using the Spanish language.
3. To achieve a pronunciation as close as possible to the native model of Hispanic consonants and vowels.
4. To fluidly and adequately debate
5. To make short oral presentations supporting a particular point of view.
6. To write academic essays in an organized manner, developing and connecting the ideas presented.
7. To develop the ability to edit their own written works with special attention to grammar, orthography and punctuation.
1. The Spanish language as an effective means to acquire a better comprehension and perception of the Peruvian culture.
2. The development of self-assuredness and fluidity through the systematic study of the Spanish language.
IV. LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Reading, synthesis and oral commentary of the reading material about Peruvian culture.
2. Communication activities in pairs and groups.
3. Oral presentations.
5. Correction of paragraphs written by students, in pairs and in groups.
6. Writing of academic essays on assigned subjects.
V. TEACHING STRATEGICS
The communicative method will be used, these are some of its characteristics:
? The student is provided with numerous opportunities to practice the Spanish language in real life situations which gives them a practical and concrete understanding of what is learned.
? In every lesson, students are informed of the goals to be reached and what is expected from them in terms of grammar learning, skills development and vocabulary acquisition.
? The constant use of learned grammatical structures provides students will numerous opportunities to retain the information.
? Various patterns of interaction are constantly used. This way, an excessive amount of professor-student communication pattern is avoided. Work in pairs and groups is highly encouraged.
? Provides a constant phonetic training for students.
? Promotes an atmosphere meant to facilitate the students? well-being, making them feel at ease, self-confident and appreciated by the teacher.
? It is based on lesson plans which include a variety of activities never to exceed periods of ten minutes each.
? The professor working with this methodology must use teaching techniques that make language learning easier for the students. Students may refer to charts, formats of grammar rules, semantic charts, etc, to facilitate the internalization of grammar and vocabulary acquisition.
? The production and use of supplementary material is perceived by the professor as a means to satisfy specific learning needs of a determined group of students. Therefore, the use of such material is constant and shall not be considered as an optional activity.
Participants learning will be graded according to the following criteria:
? Participation in class 20%
? Class or Homework 10%
? Written essay 20%
? Mid Term Exam 25%
? Final Exam 25%
