    Course Description
    This course aims to develop an understanding of the significance of Australia's marine systems and their importance in the global scene. The course examines the diversity of marine environments, both pristine and altered, sites of conservation significance, endangered plants and animals, as well as jurisdictional responsibilities. Field trips are not compulsory but highly recommended.
     
    *This course has a field trip component. Additional fees, paid directly to the university, may apply.
    Approximate field component fees - $300 for North Stradbroke Island and $600 for the Great Barrier Reef (incl GST).
     
     
    Learning Objectives
    After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
    1. Describe the nature, diversity, values and importance of marine environments under Australian control
    2. Demonstrate your understanding of the ways in which information about marine science is communicated
    3. Devise basic marine research topics for investigation by either field investigation or literature review
    4. Deliver clearly written reports using presentation styles and standards appropriate for scientific communication
    5. Visit any marine environment in the world and use basic principles to interpret prevailing environmental conditions, assess the sources of primary production, the structure of the food web, the vulnerabilities of that system to anthropogenic impacts

    A journal article represents the most highly esteemed source of information for backing scientific arguments. Leaders in a particular scientific discipline review (anonymously) each manuscript, only passing it for publication after rigorous scrutiny (or at least that is what is supposed to happen ? so always be on the lookout for mistakes). It is vital that you are able to efficiently access a range of literature and record accurately those that you use in your papers.
     
    Task Description: This simple assignment provides an opportunity to learn skills that will be crucial to excellent performance in subsequent assignments such as how to navigate and cite academic literature.
     
    Use the UQ library catalogue to access web of science and search for articles about corals within Moreton Bay. Attach your search results
     
    Find the paper that is located in Fish and Shellfish Immunology 26 (5): 799-810. Give the year of publication and names of the authors.
     
    Write a single paragraph on a marine animal or plant of interest to you by:
    • Finding six research journal papers about your chosen organism (not books or online resources).
    • Write a single paragraph that gives a synopsis of the main points in the 6 research papers (i.e. one sentence for each paper), properly citing in the text the source of the information.
    • Write your paragraph in 12pt Times New Roman, 1.5 spaced
    • After the paragraph provide an alphabetic list of the papers you have used using the style of the Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research
    • To help you with this question, look at articles from the Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research. How do authors reference literature sources in the introduction of their papers? What does the reference list at the end look like? 6 marks total (3 for in-text referencing, 3 for the reference list)

    Task Description: Complete a research report based on data collected on the Moreton Bay Research Station field trip or complete.
     
     
    Coral Reef Environments

    Task Description: Complete research report based on data collected on the Heron Island Research Station field trip. You must complete the report or essay to a high standard of grammar and expression following very closely the recommended scientific style of in-text citation and referencing. This will have been covered in the Introductory exercise so follow closely the comments made on that piece of work. More information can be found on the course Blackboard site.
