    Course Description
    Electricity, magnetism, optics, quantum physics, relativity. Laboratory experiments.
     
     
    Course Introduction
    PHYS1002 provides an introduction to 20th and 21st century physics, and its place as the basis of much of modern technology. The content includes electromagnetism from which photonic and RF/microwave communications were developed; relativity required for GPS navigation; and quantum physics critical for lasers and semiconductors, and hence computers and many other technologies. PHYS1002 is a core physics course for entry to second level physics. I expect you to find the course challenging. However, by the end you will
    • understand central concepts in electricity, magnetism, relativity, and quantum physics.
    • be able to apply these concepts to a range of numerical and experimental problems.
    • be capable of linking the underlying theory to everyday phenomena and scientific or engineering applications.
    • be able to use your problem-solving skills in other scientific and engineering areas.
    • develop skills in experimental work, report writing and using uncertainty analysis in processing experimental data.
    PHYS1002 is taught with a philosophy of active learning. This involves assigned reading before the class, with structured class discussion of questions specially chosen to test understanding of concepts and techniques. Studies at Harvard, MIT and other universities have shown such techniques to be more effective than conventional lectures in generating deep understanding of physics concepts.

    After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
     
    1. PHYSICS THEORY AND CONCEPTS
    • 1.1 To have a familiarity with physical phenomena in electromagnetism, optics, quantum mechanics, and relativity.
    • 1.2 To understand the important unifying laws and key concepts of electromagnetism, optics, quantum mechanics, and relativity.
    • 1.3 To apply these laws in particular situations, making use of a range of mathematical techniques to solve numerical problems
    • 1.4 To appreciate the physical basis of our technological society
     
    2. SCIENTIFIC SKILLS
    • 2.1 Understand the use of scientific methods
    • 2.2 To pose scientific questions/hypotheses and develop theoretical models that make testable predictions relating to these questions/hypotheses.
    • 2.3 To develop, perform, and extract meaningful measurements from experiments to test predictions of scientific models.
    • 2.4 To evaluate the validity of theoretical predictions and experimental measurements, through application of critical reasoning and uncertainty analysis.
     
    3. SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
    • 3.1 To work effectively as part of a team to solve physics problems
    • 3.2 To articulate scientific processes both verbally and in writing; including explanations of scientific questions/hypotheses, development and evaluation of theoretical models, explanation of critical reasoning and experimental procedures, and conclusions.
