Perception is the oldest topic in experimental psychology. Research on perception addresses a fundamental scientific and philosophical question: what is the nature of our experience of the world? Topics include the traditional `five senses' (vision, audit ion, touch, taste and smell) as well as other, more subtle sensory systems: perception of depth, motion, speech, and music; and perceptual illusions. Perception research reveals that what we call `reality' is constructed by the brain at an unconscious level. This subject also aims to develop a critical thinking perspective on issues and findings in psychological research.Learning Objectives1. Demonstrate understanding of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings and historical trends in sensation and perception.
2. Understand, apply and evaluate basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis and interpretation.
3. Respect & use critical & creative thinking, sceptical enquiry, and the scientific approach to solve problems related to behaviour and mental processes.
4. Use information in an ethical manner.
5. Write a theoretical essay/review article using APA structure and formatting conventions.
6. Demonstrate a capacity for independent learning.
