  • Overview

    Introduction
    This subject provides students with an introduction to research and theory in cognitive psychology. The content examines how information is acquired, processed, stored, and retrieved. The subject explores various aspects of cognitive psychology by introducing students to the theoretical perspectives that purport to explain various phenomena and the empirical literature that underpins these theories, with an aim to develop a critical thinking perspective on issues and findings in cognitive research. The lecture component is designed to provide students with an overview of selected contemporary issues in cognitive psychology, whereas the tutorial laboratories give students experience in how these issues have been investigated empirically.
     

    Learning Objectives
    1. Demonstrate understanding of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings and historical trends in cognitive psychology.
     
    2. Understand, apply and evaluate basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis and interpretation.
     
    3. Use information in an ethical manner.
     
    4. Respect and use critical and creative thinking, sceptical enquiry, and the scientific approach to solve problems related to behaviour and mental processes.
     
    5. Write a standard research report using APA structure and formatting.
     
    6. Demonstrate a capacity for independent learning.
