  • Overview

This subject introduces students to GSD Studies. We ask how sex/gender identities in their diversity are formed, represented and lived out in our private, professional and public interactions. We explore debates about how we see, are seen, or not seen as men and women by analysing the places, authorities and knowledges that link sex/gender relations to power and social justice. This includes examining sex/gender in the context of media, family, work, sport and the sex industry. We ask how our rights, responsibilities and roles in society are gendered and sexualised to the extent that they influence our changing patterns of forming relationships, and affect how we balance work, study and life. In addition to weekly readings, course materials include media images in advertising, film, television and magazines, legal and policy documents, clips from youtube and documentaries. We also examine case studies where sex/gender discrimination and harassment are at issue.
