  • Overview

    This course covers the principles of sampled data systems and the digital implementation of controllers and compensators. Topics to be covered include signal sampling and reconstruction, z-transform analysis of sampled data systems, digital controller and compensator design via classical techniques (transfer functions), state space system analysis, and design of digital controllers and compensators using modern techniques (state space systems).
    Fundamentals: signal samplers and zero order hold circuits, sampled signal spectrum and effects of sampling rates, signal reconstruction, difference equations and z-transforms, inverse z-transforms, z-transfer functions, quantisation errors.
    Frequency spectrum analysis of a sampled signal: aliasing, pre-filtering requirements, zero-order hold (ZOH).
    Analysis and design: stability of sampled data systems, Jury and other stability tests, digital control system performance specifications, error constants, sampling rate selection, z-transform analysis of sampled data feedback control systems, bilinear transformations.
    Discrete system analysis: Stability of discrete systems, time domain analysis, root locus analysis, frequency domain analysis.
    Real-time computer control systems: Real-time hardware and software requirements, real-time system design coordination. Digital control system design: Digital controller and compensator design, continuous time domain design, digital root locus design, state feedback design, digital PID design, deadbeat control algorithm. Advanced digital controllers: General predictive control. Data acquisition: interfacing, serial and parallel data communications, interface standards including RS232, RS423, RS422 and RS485. Fieldbus standard. Computer based instrumentation. Computer control of large systems: Hierarchical and supervisory control.
