This organization is a heritage charity committed to protecting and enhancing Galway's natural, built and cultural heritage for the benefit of all. The organization adopts a hands-on approach which includes supporting a number of other non-profit and charity organisations and undertaking improvement, conservation and education projects in support of its mission. Activities may include assisting or leading city tours, community education events, administrative assistance, or fundraising initiatives. Additional tasks include administrative assistance with promotional initiatives. Great placement for students looking to work closely with locals and gain experience in non-profit organization management. This organization is open year round but more likely to accept service learning students in the summer.

Student Radio Station

One of only three campus community radio stations in Ireland, this radio station has been serving the Galway university student community for over 10 years. As a radio station ‘for students, by students’, it facilitates "genuine participation" rather than one-way interactions with listeners, and provides ‘diverse and eclectic’ weekly talk shows covering a wide range of student issues like LGBT rights, Irish language shows, French language shows, Spanish language shows, university sports coverage, unsigned local artists, current affairs, on campus event coverage and more. Throughout the school year and summer, participants can join a dedicated group of local volunteers who work tirelessly to deliver a series of informative, entertaining and exciting radio programs to the wider community.

This local authority museum is owned and funded by the city with the goal of collecting, preserving, and displaying material relating to the history and heritage of the city and county. This is a good opportunity to get to know the culture and people of the area. A participant at this organization may be responsible for cataloging and updating collections, assist research and exhibition organization, and interacting with patrons of the museum.

This music institute offers music classes to kids, youth and adults with the goal of bringing music into the lives of the local community. Participants in this role will have opportunities to learn about local musical tradition help to encourage the spread of the art of music to local youth, especially traditional Andean music of the region. Qualified participants may also be able to share teaching techniques and musical expertise with the students and teachers at the Institute and help in the areas of marketing and administration.

Through the use of play, sports, and cultural activities, they hope to transform the lives of community members. This foundation comprised of governmental, political and educational institutions works to establish cultural and economic relations between Spain and the Arab world. Participants may help coordinate projects and activities, compose and translate documents, correspond with embassies and other institutions, and complete other administrative duties as assigned. PLEASE NOTE: Many participants request to work with this organization which only takes 1-2 service-learners per term so apply early!

Municipal Center for Music and Dance

Salamanca’s school for music and dance serves as an incubator for artistic talent in the city. Participants in this organization can become active members in Salamanca’s music community by playing with a city band, orchestra or school at local events. Participants may also have opportunities to interact with local students and lead a music or dance workshop depending on their skills and artistic background. PLEASE NOTE: The school is closed from the end of June through mid-September for summer vacation.

This public library is part of the cultural heart of Salamanca. Participants in this organization may contribute to this dynamic Spanish institution by helping to plan, organize and publicize weekly workshops and cultural activities for kids and adults, engaging with the community, and assisting with a variety of workshops involving art, literature, reading, English classes, and/or theatrical activities for children. Technical High School

This technical high school is dedicated to the education of technical professions such as gastronomy, food engineering, chemistry, automotive technology, and port operation. High school graduates from this program are awarded a certification in their technical area, which provides them with the skill-sets they need to start their technical career. Participants in the school may work alongside English teachers to assist students between the ages of 14-18 with grammar, pronunciation, and homework, lead tutorial sessions, and plan English language activities. Participants with significant work, volunteer, or education experience may also have opportunities to participate in the technical classrooms. *This organization is closed from the middle December until the end of February for Summer vacation and in July for winter break.

Public Primary School

This public school is located in an urban, under-served area of Valparaíso. The school's mission is to integrate all members of the community to emphasize personal improvement, responsibility, respect for oneself, others and the environment. English Language Institute

This English Language Institute is a training center that focuses on teaching the practical use of English in the workplace and everyday life to youth and adults. Participants in this role may serve as a Language Partner and assist students with the development of English skills, prepare lesson plans and other educational materials for class, lead classroom discussions, support full-time English professors, facilitate group discussions, correct student assignments, and help with pronunciation. Participants may also have opportunities to assist administrators in program development or research projects.

Special Education Center

This center is for children between the ages of 3 and 12-years-old that have autism or other special needs. In addition to the primary education classes that are conducted, the center also provides a multi-sensory stimulation classroom where students work with therapists on a weekly basis. Participants’ tasks may vary depending on their specific area of study or interest, however some of the possible responsibilities may include assisting with classroom management, providing individualized attention to students, or developing and assisting with art workshops and educational activities. For students studying physical/occupational/speech therapy, there may be opportunities to work with the center’s therapists during their sessions with the students. *This organization is closed from the middle December until the end of February for Summer vacation and in July for winter break.

As the capital city of Costa Rica, San José is home to many museums and cultural centers. Participants placed in these organizations may have opportunities to promote awareness of the rich cultural history of Costa Rica by organizing and coordinating projects for visitors, leading guided museum tours, assisting with marketing and PR projects, coordinating special events and translating marketing materials. These placements are ideal for individuals interested in archaeology, anthropology, museology, natural history, education and administration.

Participants in this role may serve as a teacher’s aide by grading papers, assisting students with homework, facilitating recreational activities, and supervising the classroom. This center empowers visually-impaired, hearing-impaired, intellectually disabled and other disabled individuals to live independently by providing counseling and physical, speech and occupational therapy in addition to music, art and physical education. Students at the center also receive dietary guidance and medical care. Participants in this organization may have chances to become actively involved in the community by aiding educational or creative instruction, assisting in the dining area, and coordinating recreational activities. *Due to vacations, this organization is not available from mid-December through the first week of February and during the month of July.

These centers work with children who are physically and/or intellectually disabled. They provide therapy, education, and recreational services. Participants may have the opportunity to shadow physical therapists, sanitize equipment and classrooms, teach English, assist with events, and plan recreational activities. This organization only accepts female participants.

Community Support Center

This organization works with people of all ages, from primary and middle school-aged youth to disabled adults and elderly Moroccans, and provides them with the care and education they need. Create and teach English lessons for varying ages and abilities, as well as fun workshops, classes and activities around the center like soccer and basketball, or even a specialized subject of your choice.

Women’s Development and Vocational Training Foundations

These foundations assist Moroccan women of all economic levels to complete their education. Many of the educational courses teach artisan skills (embroidery, calligraphy, literacy, cooking, and hair dressing) to increase employment opportunities and/or assist the women to start their own businesses. Participant opportunities may include organizing logistics, preparing lesson plans and teaching English to the women. Additional help may be needed with fundraising, marketing, or creating a social media presence or website development to help the women sell their products. *Female participants only.

This non-profit organization empowers young people through tutoring, enrichment and support. Its academic, enrichment and personal development programs are for children, youth and education providers. Based in one of Cape Town’s most under-resourced black townships, the organization has defined eight specific education programs for a variety of age groups. Participants’ responsibilities will vary based on the specific program for which they are accepted. *This partner organization is only available for full-time, 8-week service learning students.

School for Special Needs

Offering a mainstream curriculum for learners with physical disabilities, this school was founded in 1974 as a school for “differently abled” children in Xkosa-speaking communities of the Cape townships. Participants may assist in the following areas: administrative duties, coaching sports or leading other activities, supervising students during lunch and recreation times, classroom assistance and more depending on interests and skills. *This partner organization is only available for full-time, 8-week service learning students and is NOT available for summer programs.

This Catholic primary school caters to children ages 6-14 from disadvantaged communities (primarily Coloured and Black Communities). They strive to accommodate the needs of all learners and provide quality education based on a proud tradition of service. Participants in this role may help with after school care, assist students with homework, tutor students in subjects such as math and English, and serve as teaching assistants in classrooms. *This placement available to Study + Service-Learning Semester Combo students only.

This local school serves students K-12. Participants will have the opportunity to teach English and gain classroom experience working with students from Granada, Spain. Native English speakers are needed to teach pronunciation, assist teachers in daily classroom duties, help with homework and design creative activities for classes. PLEASE NOTE: Schools are closed during July and August due to summer vacation. Some local schools may offer summer school classes within a less-structured educational setting, but availability is not guaranteed.

Participants in one of these schools may serve as a teacher’s aid and gain classroom experience by working with local students. Agricultural Animal Care Center

This organization has created an environment to care for the llamas and alpacas that are a historically vital piece of Peruvian culture. Raising these animals and harvesting their wool also leads to the preservation of traditional Incan spinning, dying, and weaving practices. These cultural values are promoted among locals and tourists alike through workshops and demonstrations held at the center. Participants will assist in caring for the animals and learning the traditions of Peruvian heritage. They may also assist with tours of the facility and weaving workshops. Depending on the season, opportunities may be available with planting and harvesting various vegetables that help to feed surrounding communities.

Environmental and Sustainability Non-Profit Organization

This non-profit's mission is to raise awareness about the social and environmental benefits of recycling and the negative consequences of plastic pollution, especially in aquatic ecosystems in and around Lima. Participants will assist the staff with research, seeking project proposals for creative recycling initiatives, and developing information sessions for children, youth, and adults.. There may also be opportunities to work in a marketing capacity, generating graphics and promotional materials.

Marine Life Conservation Organization

This non-profit organization is dedicated to the research, rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine wildlife (sea lions, dolphins, penguins, marine otters, and sea turtles) along the central and northern coastline of Peru. The organization's efforts rely heavily on community awareness and support, so observation and research are key parts of a participant's role. Daily duties may consist of facility maintenance, cleaning and feeding of animals, observation of rehabilitated animals, and data collection. *NOTE: This organization is located in San Bartolo, 50km south of the ISA office; accepted participants will be required to stay onsite in San Bartolo and therefore, this placement is not available to students on a semester study program. Veterinary Clinics

Centrally located in Cusco, this veterinary clinic is dedicated to providing high quality veterinary services to the local pets and service animals by focusing on preventative health, giving vaccines, performing surgeries, and conducting overall health assessments. Participants in the clinic may assist in various areas under the supervision of veterinary staff. Participants may have opportunities to assist customers, bathe and trim the animals, walk the dogs, clean the cages or exercise areas, and observe the veterinarians during procedures. Participants can also be a great asset to the clinic by translating for English-speaking clients.

Participants will have opportunities to facilitate recreational and educational programs, help with homework and assignments, and form connections with students.

Center for the Disabled

This public center sponsored by the First Lady of the Dominican Republic provides diagnostic and rehabilitation services to children with mental and physical disabilities such as autism spectrum disorders, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. The center aims to provide integrative services to children with special needs and develop their physical and mental abilities along with preparing them for effective social inclusion. Services at the center include evaluation, diagnosis, and therapy. Participants may have the opportunity to help the physical therapy, nutrition, and psychology staff and also observe consultations.

This organization is dedicated to promoting and coordinating activities that lead to successful development for some of the most disadvantaged youth in Santiago. Participants will have the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of children who utilize the dining hall for meals, education and healthcare. This national foundation helps make dreams come true for terminally-ill children and provides an all-inclusive and accessible play center for children of all needs and abilities. Participants in this role may have opportunities to serve both in the foundation's office and in the play center. Possible responsibilities may include fundraising support, research, database entry, play center maintenance, and helping supervise play areas. ** NOTE: This organization requires a commitment of up to 30 hours per week and work on weekends.

Senior Development and Advocacy Services Center

This non-profit organization provides a range of services to seniors. The organization is eager to have college students contribute their time and effort to teach computer skills to seniors in classroom settings or one-on-one throughout the week. There is also the opportunity to run all-day workshops on how to use video calling services (such as Skype) and social media.

Girls' Leadership Training Program

The mission of this organization is to enable girls and young women to develop to their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world. It is an inclusive organization for girls and women of all ages with a strong emphasis on the outdoors, environment, community responsibility and teamwork. The mission of the organization is to support the families of children with special needs and long term illness who spend extended periods of time in medical facilities. The aim is to enhance the well-being of the family unit through fun and recreational activities including music, art and play therapy as well as guardian(s) support mechanisms. While working at the Summer Youth Camps, service-learning participants gain hands-on skills and serve a community based need by helping facilitate activities ranging from art, drama, music, dance etc.

Family Support Center

This organization offers a wide range of services to children and teenagers in disadvantaged areas in the city of Galway. They help to promote and encourage self-improvement and general well-being. They run a homework club throughout the school term, which offers children practical assistance with homework, and aims to inspire young people to develop their self-confidence and see the value in education. The center also runs an activity group which aims to promote social inclusion through arts and crafts, sport, drama, and cooking projects, which aids young people to develop their social skills and gain confidence in their abilities. Activities undertaken by the club include; youth exchanges, day trips, mid-term and summer camps, yoga and meditation, cookery classes, grinds (tutoring), as well as workshops on building healthy relationship and improving I.T skills.

Special Needs Partnership

Assist with a non-profit organization that works to provide support for individuals and families affected by a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Set up by a concerned parent group in 2011 to address a need for service provision, information, advocacy and support for families living with ASD, the Special Needs Partnership has since been providing social clubs, respite camps, skills building workshops and family fun days and activities for individuals on the spectrum, siblings and whole families. Participants may support and supervise children of various ages diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder with and without additional needs (e.g Intellectual Disability) in a range of clubs and activities. These might include Lego Club, Movie Production Club, and Play Groups, as well as after school activities, special holiday clubs, and weekend social clubs. Potential opportunities to help supervise additional special interest clubs may arise.

This Youth Service Center provides youth work, education, training & employability projects for young people. They supports a number of diverse youth work projects including international youth work. The organization enhances the civic, educational, personal & social development of young people with programs focusing on a broad range of topics from leaderships skills, animal welfare, and web safety to creative arts, music, and sports. A participant in this role may be involved with in group study sessions, arts, teaching, and a limited amount of administrative work.

At-Risk Youth Development and Rehabilitation Center

Empower Peru’s at-risk youth by serving in a boy’s or girl’s home in the outskirts of the city of Lima.The goal of this organization is to promote, through prevention and rehabilitation, the healthy and integral development of children and adolescents at high risk in Peru. The aim here is to encourage functional participation in academic, social, and familial settings in a healthy and violence-free environment. ISA participants will work closely with experienced staff and volunteers to promote daily practices of hygiene and health, as well as quality education. Participant responsibilities vary from assisting with day to day operations and facility maintenance, to leading workshops in language, fitness, art, and sports. Participants with a high level of Spanish proficiency may have the opportunity to observe and assist in the center's department of Psychology. *The Center is located on the outskirts of Lima, a 45-minute commute on a provided volunteer van. This placement is not available to students on a semester study program.

Center for Students with Learning Disabilities

The Center for Students with Learning Disabilities is a bilingual center dedicated to supporting children and teenagers with alternative forms of support for their academics. The center also provides families with consulting services to best support their student. The multidisciplinary team of experts create specialized approaches incorporating family, school, and the therapist. Staff creates personalized programs of support as well as psychological, learning, language, occupational/sensory, physical, and psycho-motor evaluations. Service Learning participants must have an INTERMEDIATE Spanish language level or higher. This organization is closed the last weeks of July and December and for the months of January and February.

These organizations offer comprehensive services for children and young people with special needs in Cusco, Peru. Their services aim to improve the quality of life for these youth by teaching them how to better interact in their social and academic environments. Participants will serve as support for children with disabilities and may assist with feeding and skills exercises, as well as facilitating entertaining sensory activities through music and art. Opportunities to observe speech and physical therapists on site may also be available.

These local, grass-roots organizations seek to provide a welcoming and safe environment in which high risk youth are able to improve their self-esteem, gain important life skills, and strive for a productive future. Participants can facilitate games, help with homework and organize recreational afternoon activities. Depending on skills and training, participants may also help in classes or workshops.

Family Support Center

Spanish (Intermediate)

This non-profit opened in 2014 and is dedicated towards improving the health and welfare of Peruvian children. The organization provides a "home away from home" for many families that must travel to Lima so that they can be near their children during their hospitalization. Participants will assist with maintaining the facility to ensure a comfortable and welcoming environment for the families in need. Participants will also serve to support the families staying at the home during very trying times. Interested participants may have the opportunity to support fundraising events, support weekly workshops, create brochures and marketing materials, and assist in social media networking.

Children's Rehabilitation Institute

This institute serves children with physical, mental or sensory impairments. Through physical therapy, social integration, and educational activities, the children are prepared for a functional society. The institute follows an early treatment approach known as the Doman Method, and one in which the parents of the child participate actively in the rehabilitation program. Students that have experience or interest in fundraising or construction may assist with these projects. Participants will learn about health management and how clinics operate in Costa Rica. Participants will have the opportunity to help the administrative department, interact with patients and be part of organizing workshops for the community. Shadowing doctors is not allowed in this clinic due to strict politics, but there’s a chance that the student might shadow the dentist during small procedures, but is not guaranteed. The clinic is open to new ideas and if the participant wants to develop a specific project regarding the medical area, it can be discussed with the supervisor and the onsite service-learning coordinator. Labor Rights Support Center

This nonprofit is dedicated to defending the rights of domestic workers and working children, as well as to providing education to children in underprivileged communities around Lima. Participants may primarily be asked to assist with tutoring in after school programs in the outskirts of Lima, and may be required to assist with workshops on Sundays. Sunday workshops are designed to promote awareness of workers’ rights and human rights, as well as to inform the public of child labor. Participants may also help organize donations of clothing, school materials and educational information, as well as participate in recreational activities with the domestic workers and children who participate in the organization’s many projects across the city.
