Euro-Arab Educational Foundation

Spanish (High Intermediate)

This foundation comprised of governmental, political, and educational institutions works to establish cultural and economic relations between Spain and the Arab world. Participants may help coordinate projects and activities, compose and translate documents, correspond with embassies and other institutions, and complete other administrative duties as assigned. PLEASE NOTE: Many participants request to work with this organization which only takes 1-2 service-learners per term so apply early!

Humanitarian Aid and Sustainable Development Organization

Spanish (Beginning)

This organization focuses on the development of impoverished communities with the help of humanitarian aid and sustainable development projects. Education, especially for women and children, and environmental programs are the main tools to fight injustice and encourage sustainability. Participants may contribute through project development, fundraising, and assisting with administrative tasks. All Spanish levels are welcome!

Local School

Spanish (High Beginning)

This local school serves students K-12. Participants will have the opportunity to teach English and gain classroom experience working with students from Granada, Spain. Native English speakers are needed to teach pronunciation, assist teachers in daily classroom duties, help with homework and design creative activities for classes. PLEASE NOTE: Schools are closed during July and August due to summer vacation. Some local schools may offer summer school classes within a less-structured educational setting, but availability is not guaranteed.

Environmental Education Cooperative

Spanish (Beginning)

This cooperative is dedicated to designing and developing educational resources related to environmental education and values. In addition to extracurricular activities at the "aula de naturaleza" and morning classroom activities, the staff carries out educational projects with municipalities and offers multiple resources and services to local schools. Service-learning participants may have an active role in all the activities of the cooperative such as helping with itineraries, storytelling, hiking, workshops, training talks, and animation activities. PLEASE NOTE: In June and July, participants may assist with the summer school programs where service-learning participants offer support to the "ludoteca," a play center for the children during the summer.

Family Support Center for Children with Autism

Spanish (Intermediate)

The mission of the organization is to support children on the autism spectrum as well as their families. The aim is to enhance the well-being of the family unit through fun and recreational activities including music, art, and play therapy as well as guardian(s) support mechanisms. Additionally, the center provides space to respond to the needs of this group in Granada. Serve alongside community members to carry out workshops designed for children with autism which promote autonomy, manual skills, and psychomotor skills. PLEASE NOTE: In July, the organization has summer school for children with special needs. The organization is closed in August.

Community Foundation for Youth and Senior Citizens

Spanish (Beginning), Spanish (Advanced)

This local foundation's mission is to promote human development and preserve the integrity and cultural identity of social groups in Granada. Service-learning participants are needed to provide support to senior citizens and youth involved in the foundation's programs. Participants can build relationships with community members and help facilitate games for senior citizens, tutoring sessions for youth, theater activities, and summer school programs. PLEASE NOTE: This organization is closed in August. Participants interested in working with senior citizens must have an advanced level of Spanish. Participants interested in working with youth may have beginner to advanced level of Spanish.

Community Health Organization

Spanish (Beginning)

This organization is dedicated to providing rehabilitation and mental health services to vulnerable populations in Granada by providing comprehensive medical services and assistance to individuals with disabilities and the homeless. Participants in this role will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the sociopolitical issues in the local community by engaging with patients and community members, offering support to the occupational therapy department, providing support as a teacher’s assistant in the special education school or the dining hall, or helping sort and organize donations. PLEASE NOTE: Placement assignments that may involve patient interaction are observation-based; participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility.

Senior Citizens' Home

Spanish (Beginning)

Within walking distance of the ISA office, this organization is dedicated to providing services for senior citizens to achieve their maximum quality of life and well-being. Help staff coordinate and lead recreational and cultural activities designed to improve and maintain the residents' level of personal autonomy and independence. Take initiative to plan creative activities, organize games, take walks, read and talk with residents, teach dance or aerobics classes, and assist with everyday activities. This organization can take up to 10 service-learning participants at a time and sustainable group projects are encouraged to serve a need identified by the Senior Citizen’s Home. PLEASE NOTE: Placement assignments that may involve patient interaction are observation-based; participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility. This organization cannot accept participants from June 15th - June 30th, available to accept participants in July but closed in August.

Cancer Prevention and Support Center

Spanish (Intermediate)

This organization’s mission is to improve the lives of people who are affected by cancer. Service-learning participants will work directly with community members and may assist staff in teaching classes with a focus on boosting moral and providing emotional support. Participants have the opportunity to take initiative and actively participate in structured activities. Participants may also facilitate and organize activities for children receiving treatment at the center. To serve at this organization, participants must have a background in health, child psychology, and experience with organizing play-based activities. PLEASE NOTE: Placement assignments that may involve patient interaction are observation-based; participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility. The center is only open in the mornings during July and August due to Summer vacation.
