Community Center

Spanish (High Intermediate)

This organization is a non-profit foundation whose main mission is to promote the sustainable and cultural development of Valparaíso through community activities and the regeneration of neighborhoods. This community center offers a space for Valparaíso to come and connect with their neighbors through community work and workshops to train communities in the field of bio-construction. The community center also focuses on education, which is an area where service-learning participants may offer assistance. Classes range from dance, art, craft, cooking, English language, yoga, art therapy, and workshops for kids. Based on participants' skills and interests, service-learning students may have the opportunity to assist or teach their own workshop or class, aid with construction projects, handle administrative tasks, help with marketing and social media initiatives, and more. A successful participant will be an individual who is ready and willing to help in a variety of tasks to meet the organization's mission.

English Language Institute

Spanish (Intermediate)

This English Language Institute is a training center that focuses on teaching the practical use of English in the workplace and everyday life to youth and adults. Participants in this role may serve as a Language Partner and assist students with the development of English skills, prepare lesson plans and other educational materials for class, lead classroom discussions, support full-time English professors, facilitate group discussions, correct student assignments, and help with pronunciation. Participants may also have opportunities to assist administrators in program development or research projects.

Special Education Center

Spanish (Intermediate)

This center is for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years-old that have autism or other special needs. In addition to conducting primary education classes, the center also provides a multi-sensory stimulation classroom where students work with therapists on a weekly basis. Participants’ tasks may vary depending on their specific area of study or interest, however, some of the possible responsibilities may include assisting with classroom management, providing individualized attention to students, or developing and assisting with art workshops and educational activities. For students studying physical/occupational/speech therapy, there may be opportunities to work with the center’s therapists during their sessions with the students. *This organization is closed from the middle December until the end of February for Summer vacation and in July for winter break.

Technical High School

Spanish (Beginning)

This technical high school is dedicated to the education of technical professions such as gastronomy, food engineering, chemistry, automotive technology, and port operation. High school graduates from this program are awarded a certification in their technical area, which provides them with the skill-sets they need to start their technical career. Participants in the school may work alongside English teachers to assist students between the ages of 14-18 with grammar, pronunciation, homework, lead tutorial sessions, and plan English language activities. Participants with significant work, volunteer, or education experience may also have opportunities to participate in the technical classrooms. *This organization is closed from mid-December until the end of February for Summer vacation and in July for winter break.

Public Primary School

Spanish (High Intermediate)

This public school is located in an urban, under-served area of Valparaíso. The school's mission is to integrate all members of the community and emphasize personal improvement, responsibility, respect for oneself, others and the environment. Participants in school may assist teachers in English-language classrooms, lead recreational activities, and help with workshops on a variety of subjects. *This organization is closed from mid-December until the end of February for Summer vacation and in July for winter break.

Community Environmental and Cultural Park

Spanish (High Intermediate)

This unique park is run by local volunteers and organizations and serves as a community space for social and environmental education. The area consists of hiking trails, gardens, and an educational workshop which aim to promote environmental, artistic, and cultural recreation in the community. Participants in this role may have opportunities to assist with fundraising and promotion, social media initiatives, community outreach, environmental education workshops, and projects.

Health Clinics

Spanish (Advanced)

These health clinics throughout Valparaíso are part of the Ministry of Education and Health and seek to provide the best quality basic healthcare, consultations, and health education. Participants in this role may observe consultations, learn health field terminology, participate in administrative duties performed in a health care setting, and help provide social, educational, and health and wellness outreach to the community. Placements that may involve patient interaction are observation-based; participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility. *Spots at health clinics are limited *Additional fees may apply for placements in medical clinics for required materials.

Center for Infantile Nutrition

Spanish (Beginning)

This center aims to promote infantile nutrition by providing health care and tending to developmental needs. Based on participants' skills and interests, they may help with web design projects and also aid with marketing and local fundraising efforts for the center. The organization is working to procure funding in order to implement a construction project and build an interior patio and play area for the toddlers. Students that have experience or interest in fundraising or construction may assist with these projects. It is important to note that participants will be working in close proximity to a vulnerable population of infants and toddlers suffering from secondary malnutrition and other health disorders, however, direct interaction will be limited. Participants are required to complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) workshop for eligibility.
