Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995, Colonia del Sacramento is a small southwestern Uruguayan city of 27,000 inhabitants situated on the Rio de la Plata river. The city faces Buenos Aires (40 km away) off of the Uruguay coast, and was founded by the Portuguese in 1680, and fought over for years by the crowns of Spain and Portugal, then later Brazil, finally becoming Uruguayan after independence in 1828.
Colonia (as it is commonly known) contains a mixture of Portuguese colonial buildings with typical Spanish style homes. There are many city attractions for visitors, such as: La Calle de los Suspiros (Street of Sighs), el Faro (the lighthouse), las Ruinas del Convento de San Francisco (the Ruins of the Convent of San Francisco), La Puerta de la Ciudadela (The Gate of the Citadel) and La Iglesia Matriz (The Mother Church). Colonia is located just a 2 hour drive from Montevideo (Uruguay´s capital), and is frequented by citizens from the capitals of both Argentina and Uruguay.
During the excursion, ISA students will explore the city by bus, gaining an appreciation for the historic districtand its beautiful architecture. Students will have the opportunity to experience wonderful views of the Rio de la Plata. In addition, they will be given a guided walking tour of the historic district where they will learn Colonia?s history; from its founding to the present.
