Beijing and Great Wall

Location: China

Beijing is the capital city of China and home to most of the country's most significant historical monuments. Although one could spend months in Beijing and still not see all that it has to offer, participants will have the opportunity to see the major sites of Beijing, from the Forbidden City to the Summer Palace to the Temple of Heaven. Beijing is also the seat of China's political power and has a much more traditional population than the more commercially-focused Shanghai. As Beijing hosted the Summer 2008 Olympics, the government embarked on a massive city-wide cleanup effort which has made China's capital even more enjoyable than ever before.

One day of this excursion will be devoted to seeing the Great Wall of China and the Ming Dynasty Tombs just outside of Beijing. The part of the excursion will involve a good deal of physical activity, so students should come prepared to do some hiking.
